Does anyone know of an external hardrive which is just powered by the USB connection, so there is no need to plug it into a socket for power.

Yes there are many, however they use 2.5" HD's so are generally quite expensive compared to desktop external HD's and have a fraction of the storage capacity..

Welcome to HUKD kirans

You can get a USB powered 160GB 2.5" mobile HD for £75 delivered here

Does this come with software that would back everything up automatically for you please? Voted hot.

Normally, most extrenal HDDs are Plug and Play meaning that you dont need any software to get them up and running. Which is pretty good when transfering stuff ...

I almost bought this last time I saw it. Instead I got the one edi linked to because it is usb powered. Smaller capacity but more portable and given that I am potentially only in the UK short term it makes more sense to be independent of regional adapter and voltage differences.

I am still looking for a monster NAS if anybody sees any deals..

It comes up as £97.99?
