Yes, I know the 5th gen is due out before December and it will be 5% thinner, 5% lighter and 5% faster but 100% more expensive

How do you get the warranty if the machine cannot be registered with Apple

Very tempted. Anyone know the quality of their refurbs? Are they eligible for AppleCare?

Good deal, just got one for in laws, now I will have to be an, I.T guru and set it up, then run a 24hr help line for them... joy!

It was only released here in November last year so should still be within Apples warranty period. You can check how much Apple warranty the one you get has left by entering the serial number here:
selfsolve.apple.com/agr….do
It all depends on when the refurb unit you get was originally purchased.
By PC World/Curry's statement I assume they mean that the stated 12months warranty is with them and not Apple. Hence, you can not register for the full 12months warranty with Apple.

64gb not even in stock? Were they when you posted ?

They were still in stock 8 mins ago, the white one was even reduced to £349.55 (£367.50 before code) on currys!
Keep an eye on whichever model you want as they keep coming in and out of stock.
Depending on which browser you use, you can set an auto refresh to alert you when the page changes and it comes back in stock.

Stock seems to keep coming in and out, they also seem to be messing with the prices:

An extra £40 to have one which has been refurbished by Apple (PC World are not authorised to refurbish them), to have a new years warranty, and to have the ability to go to Apple when things go wrong, not PC World.

I'd pay the extra £40.

Yep, me to; and you can add the extra 2 years cover from Apple.

Just to clarify.. you can definitely register these refurb products with applecare.

I recently bought a 2012 iMac refurb from currys that clearly stated it wasn't eligible for applecare. I rang up apple, activated the 1 year warranty and then applied a 2 year additional applecare on the product. All i did was send them an invoice of proof of purchase.

Hope this helps.

All now around £20 dearer than original posted prices but more relevant all OOS!

I managed to bag a 16gb 4th gen 4G one for £295, but I have had orders cancelled by currys in the past though, due to no stock, so far I have just had the order confirmation.

The advisor probably got confused - unless it's sold by an authorised refurbisher (which DSGi aren't), you cannot register. When Apple/AASPs refurbish them, they give them a new serial number, since the warranty can only be registered once per serial.

Maybe you were lucky and your machine was a DOA one that was never registered, but it would be wrong to assume you can claim a years Apple warranty on these (you may be lucky and get a DOA one that hasn't been registered, you may not). Either way, you're getting a device that someone from PCW has opened.

Missed this again
hope they come back in stock

I wouldn't worry too much about the warranty. Not much goes wrong with iPads because they are sealed units that don't get dust in them or get really hot. They also have solid state drives so no moving parts. Most problems will be apparent as soon as you get it, in which case you can return to currys. A few problems may manifest themselves within the first few months, in which case you have until at least November (probably longer) because all Apple units have a year warranty and I don't think they even check the owner. They usually just check that it's faulty and give you a new one from a drawer. If it is faulty after more than a year you can possibly go into an apple store and quote European regulations of a mandatory 2 year warranty on all products and they may fix it for you.

I think extra AppleCare for iPads is a bit of a con. £70 for an extra year coverage is a big premium. Apple are basically saying that there is a 1 in 5 chance that the iPad will fail in the second year of ownership (probably higher if you factor in the lower cost of replacement of a year old ipad). I don't have figures to back this up but I imagine the actual amount of iPads that break in year 2 is probably nearer 1 in 100. AppleCare is definitely worth it on a £1500 iMac or MacBook pros but not for iPads. Personally, I just accept that there is a small chance that phones and tablets may fail outside warranty and will just take the hit if that happens.

£299 brand new ebay 16gb 4th gen at christmas one of the lucky ones.

sorry I had to lol ;-)

Banned

I'll wait for the 5th gen. Hopefully they'll scrap 16GB and move have 32/64/128GB capacities in today's 16/32/64GB price slots.

If (and yes I know it's a big if) that happens a 32GB 5th gen will only be £399, just £77 more than these 4th gen refurbs.

Fingers crossed!

Could a mod please unexpire this? Thanks.

16GB Cellular ordered too for someone else in the family, decided it would be rude not to at £295!

Ive just had an email to say :

Dear XXX
Thank you for your recent CURRYS order.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, we regret to inform you that you may not receive your order within the delivery timescale indicated on the website. We will contact you shortly to discuss the matter with you, in the meantime please accept our apologies for the potential delay.

Hopefully they arent going to cancel the order.

It was an oversight on my part. The 16Gb £295 iPad was a cellular (4G) model, not just a wifi one. The Apple refurb price for which is £424 making it a difference of around £130 not £40.
For £130 I'd personally stick with DSG's warranty and use less than half the saving towards an accidental damage and theft policy.

I've just received this email from Currys...

I just called them and was told I can just wait until more refurb stock arrives and they will fulfil the order i.e. I don't need to do anything further - just wait.

At least they're willing to honour the order as soon as they get stock. Unlike other retailers that simply cancel your order when they make a stock error.

If I had the spare cash and a devious nature, I'd be tempted to order a new one, use it for a couple of days then send it back to help them replenish their refurbs inventory.
(In case anyone else had the same idea, don't do it! It is very wrong! )
