It depends on your priorities. This is roughly the same price as the iPad Air 2019.

The Air has the newer A12 chipset, but the Pro has the 120hz screen, stereo speakers, a flash/torch and a better camera which can film at 4k 30fps and 1080p 60fps.

In day-to-day use, reviews say it’s hard to notice a performance difference between the A10x and A12 processors. With that in mind, I’d go for this older Pro. The extra features are genuinely useful.

Is this the 2017 one?

the ipad pro is significantly more expensive than the ipad. is the additional cost worthwhile?

What I've done. Purchased the iPad pro over the 2019 iPad air. Got mine for £330 off eBay and I'm happy with it.
The new iPad Pro’s with FaceID have certainly made the existing/former iPads that do not look very dated too.
I personally don’t care much for the new iPad Pro. I have this one and it’s as smooth as silk. What I don’t like in the new iPad Pro is the slim bezel all around, it means your thumb /fingers have no where to go when using in landscape. Also the new pros are more prone to bending. Everyone to their own though.
Does the pencil work with this?

I have both and while I stuck with the Pro 10.5, the Air is the better purchase today I’d say. You can get it for much less than this as well - and the other guy was right, the ‘A10X’ isn’t well catered for whereas the A12 is a mainstream but flagship chip that apps were designed around. Finally the Pro had that annoying white spot issue which hopefully the Air won’t have. The Pro does have the better display but it’s not worth accepting older tech for it imo, same with the quad speakers - which are great. I don’t think I ever used the camera or LED flash, I always laugh when I see someone trying to film on a tablet because it looks so utterly absurd and unwieldy.

Get the Air 3 10.5”, you might see third-party deals via eBay sellers etc. Don’t get the 10.2”, it’s a budget waste of time with ancient (as far as tablets go) tech recycled from the 2013 Air.

Yes. The new Pro is coming out Q1 next year, so retailers will want to start getting rid of their stock of old 2017 Pros.
