iPhone 5 Battery Replacement Program

Found 23rd Aug 2014
Not a deal as such, but I'm sure some of you will find this useful, Apple will replace your iPhone 5 battery free of charge if your iPhone falls in a limited serial number range due to a batch of dodgy batteries causing poor battery life.

From the website:

Apple has determined that a very small percentage of iPhone 5 devices may suddenly experience shorter battery life or need to be charged more frequently. The affected iPhone 5 devices were sold between September 2012 and January 2013 and fall within a limited serial number range.

If your iPhone 5 is experiencing these symptoms and meets the eligibility requirements noted below, Apple will replace your iPhone 5 battery, free of charge.

Available in the UK from 29th August 2014.

(5S & 5C Models are not affected, only the original 5)

Thanks Dappy, just moved this to misc as its more of headsup than a deal.

Is there a way to check the serial range?

IPhone 6 has a new design slimmer 2 mm
Battery at a low 1810 ma hours capacity.
Let's hope
Apple knows what they are doing

"We’re sorry, there was a problem processing your request. Please try again in a few minutes. "
Damn it....

Apparantly mine isn't one of the affected ones, despite the battery being absolutely shocking and being replaced in that time period.

Same!

Thanks for the info though OP

Same here, even the shop said it was rubbish and below what was expected for a age of the phone when i took it in a couple of months ago grr

Interesting. Got two iPhones in nov 2012 in the same package and just checked the serial numbers. One qualifies and the other doesn't. Oh well at least one gets a new battery. Thank OP.

Did mine before and it is included in the program so will be going to an Apple Store soon. Battery is pretty dire on my phone now.

Thanks OP.

Battery died a month or two ago; kept overheating when charging and the charge lasted a few hours.
Don't have the box so I cant check the serial; Guess I'll just bring it to the Apple store?

Worst phone I've ever owned.

Worth a shot taking it into an Apple Store.

Hopefully they take it back, lasted about 6 months.

I went through live chat as it said not eligible. The man said its fine after doing checks but said I could take it Instore. Then transferred me to someone else but I couldn't send anything for some reason. But I bought mine in sep 2012 had it changed due to the button problem everyone had in June 2013. So might go Instore and explain the situation.. As I can't be dealing with this battery issue. Or maybe wait for the new one and buy that not sure

Thanks op

This happened to mine for no reason it just started draining really fast , over heating , took apple store twice in Manchester thay did test ect said their was nothing wrong with it despite only have it 3 months , 3 rd time me & my partner took down to the Trafford centre thay was happy to help and exchanged it for it never had a problem with this one ..

So.. How do i find out if my 5 is elligible , coz my batt life is shocking, luv the fine but this is **** as ****!!

The iPhone 5 c has a terrible battery as well

How can I check if mine is eligible please ?

As of August 22, 2014, the replacement process will be available in the U.S. and China. In other countries, it will be available as of August 29, 2014.

Excellent - apparently my phone is eligible which is perfect 'cos its battery life is desperate. Delighted!

Thank you for this, mine is eligible. I got it in Feb 2013, the serial number can also be found on the box for anyone having any problems getting it off the phone. Maybe this will solve the problem of it spontaneously dying when it still shows over 30% battery left.

mine is also eligible, which i'm happy about. wonder how long the actual replacement will take ?

funnily enough, it's also eligible for the sleep button replacement program as well - wonder if they'll do both ?

I took mine in and they never mentioned a fault charged me £55 as said the battery was worn!

I know men did not fall in to this category as I purchased mine July 2012 but just tested this theory by entering g my serial number which I found in Settings -> General -> About and scrolled down to my Serial Number. Then I clicked in the Link under Hatlzer' s message. And sure enough mine is fine.
Easy enough to check.
Good Luck to those needing a new battery. Hope you get it sorted very soon ;-) xx

How do I find the serial number if the phone won't go on? Tried the imei number but won't work?

Look on the link in the 3rd comment, it shows you how to find your serial number next to the submit button (support.apple.com/kb/…061)

Edit: oops sorry i didnt read your question properly. I'm not too sure about that.

The serial number is on the back of the phone....

Mine is one of the affected ones, that explains why the battery life is so bad! Thanks OP!

Mine was one of them! They lied when I took it into their store!!

OMG thank you, thank you, thank you. I have hated this phone for the last year and have been counting down the days to throwing it in the bin and getting a new one. Now I can claim a brand new battery free of charge! Hurrah!

I went to apple about 4 months ago due to my terrible battery life and a screen that was nearly falling off. they found the battery had actualy swollen which was pushing the screen off the phone!! They pretty much threw a new phone at me and ran me out of the store! I guess I wasn't the only one then... shocking

Thanks for this OP. Took my phone in to Apple store last December with same symptoms described here, they ran diagnostic test and found faulty battery. Wanted £50+ for new battery. I've been hanging on for the iPhone 6 ever since. At least can get new battery now FOC so my phone will have some resale value after all..

Thanks OP, my phone is eligible and that explains why battery life is shocking and has been getting worse each day. My phone turns off on some days when 35% battery visible, yet as soon as you plug in the charger, it displays 70%+

The link below is for the UK site where you can check you serial number.

I then went on and have booked a genius bar appointment.

I assume these are done on the spot while you wait? I can't see any mention of being provided with a replacement handset so gather it is done during the visit.

I live in Edinburgh, cant find out how i go about taking my phone somewhere for repair?! No Apple shops in my city, anyone know what i do?
