iPhone 5 Sleep/Wake button FREE repair from Apple (some handsets) - check if eligible!

Apple will replace your sleep/wake button for FREE if it is part of an affected batch.

Might work out well for some with broken on/off buttons, and with an expired warrantee.

I've just checked while writing this and it turns out that my iPhone 5 is eligible. Only issue is, my button seems to be working fine.

If you require a loaner during the time that your iPhone is being serviced, participating Apple Retail Stores will have iPhone 5 models (16GB only) available.

EDIT: The program will only be in action as of 2 May.

UPDATE:
The 'loaner' phone does not actually have to be retuned, and can be kept instead of your own. This phone will probably be refurbished, so you can make your decision when you get the loan phone and see its condition. This should work out well if you have a 16GB iPhone in poor condition.

Thanks!

Annoying that the current gen iPod Touch isn't eligible for this. My sleep button only works 50% of the time, stops it from feeling like a premium product. Very unapple-like.

Even if it works fine I can have the button replaced?

Thanks op! My Iphone is eligible. Does anyone know up until what date this runs until? It starts on 2nd May but ends?

Great. Mine stopped working months ago. Weird that it's taken them this long to do anything about the problem they were clearly aware of. The 5 has been out for 18 months.

Why is it only for iphone 5? I have a 4s and my button isn't working properly.

And what about all the faulty iphone 4s's with the same problem, I got quoted £159 for a replacement handset!!!!

My volume button started playing up about the same time as my sleep/wake, hopefully they fix all my problems.

Go on tell me where I can?

Mine used yo be dodgy when I first got it and then it "fixed" itself. Have just checked the eligibility and it is may send it for replacement anyway.

I had this issue with my phone and it shows eligible now. Unfortunately I already swapped it with Apple at throwaway price as repair cost was too high...will I get compensated somehow? I still have box of this old phone....sham

Can anyone tell me how much a repair will cost for this out of warranty and not this serial number?

Always worth a try, I would book a genius appointment for next time you happen to be around your local Apple Store.
Otherwise, maybe ask to speak with the store manager. Complain, and hope that they offer you something.

Only Apple can tell you if you book a Genius Bar appointment and take it in.

Thats brilliant, My button stopped working a month back and turns out my phone is eligible for repair. Thanks for bringing this to our attention :0)

My friend's one had this, she sent it back to Vodafone to be fixed, took them about 2 months to fix it, and they refuse to refund her anything for the 2 months of contract time she missed having to use a different phone and SIM card. Says all you need to know about that company, really.

Replacement phone if u take it to apple store while they repair it then?

Yes, that's what it seems to say on the Apple website.

Additional Information
Apple may restrict or limit repair to the original country of purchase.

Your iPhone 5 must be in working order to qualify for this program.

If you believe you have paid for a replacement due to this issue, contact Apple regarding a refund.

This worldwide Apple program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the iPhone.

The program covers iPhone 5 models for 2 years after the first retail sale of the unit.

I rang my local apple store yesterday to book mine in for the 2nd of May and they didn't even know anything about it. I Had to wait on hold for them to see what it was.
They said to book a genius slot for repair. I asked about a loan phone and they said the repair will take place instore and not be sent off.
So will find out next week.

The ones Apple supply are brand new.

The loaner phone, is that free? If not.. How many days does it tend to take for said repair?

I took my iPhone 5 in to Apple last month with this problem and they told me the only option was a replacement at over £200! I tried to tell them it was a common hardware fault but they said it wasn't.
A month later and now they finally admit the fault and offer free repairs, but I've already got mine repaired elsewhere. However, as I see it says "If you believe you have paid for a replacement due to this issue, contact Apple regarding a refund." that's exactly what I'll be doing. Fingers crossed for a refund for the repair costs.

Oh I got happy till I saw that 4S not included - mines been playing up for months, it mainly bothers me that I can't do screenshots!

This issue goes back to the iPhone 4 - a lot on the forums about malfunctioning side buttons! The side buttons on my phone stopped working just after the 1 year warranty period (Sod's law) and had to resort to using the assistive touch as I didn't want to cough up more money for a replacement.

Did she send the SIM card back to them as well though? Or did she have the PAYM SIM card during those two months?

My iphone 4 sleep button stopped working, and i also used assistive touch, apple wanted £120 to replace the phone, i had 6 months left of my contract so i waited til i got a new phone, shame they can fix it though as it would be easier to sell on

Mines dodgy, fell in a while ago so this is great, thanks! Heat added!

About time! Heat added

Anything free from Apple desearves heat! Out-of-warranty replacements cost £160 for a 4S and £209 for a 5S, so a 5 repair is easily over £100. Heated

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

heat x a billion, I was quoted £130 for a repair by O2 who I have my phone under contract with pric** -.-

What happens if you keep the loaner phone instead of giving it back (just curious) and also how much is it to get on loan?

Thanks
