Press something) as that will connect you with the right people much quicker.5) Tell the person you want to pay your device in full and cancel the airtime. They will ask you why, tell them you don't think the airtime is a good value for money, but you want to keep the phone because you think it's an outstanding value for money. They will ask you for card details, you tell those details and that's it, they cancel it for you in about an hour.6) You own the phone from that point, assumed that you have done this straightaway, there won't be any charges, otherwise you will have to pay as much airtime as you have used.7) Unlock code will come through in about 2 to 48 hours.8) In first month they might take the airtime from your bank account through direct debit because they generate the bill the next day you apply for a contract, don't be scared as this will be refunded the next month, if not, call them again.

wow. people voting cold can come up for anything better for this phone?

Just to confirm it 100% works it arrived at 3pm today activated the phone/SIM card then went into the online account section and requested the unlocking code which takes 24 hours. I then called o2 customer services to pay off the phone at £145 and she ended the airtime agreement straight away. Had a email of confirmation instantly of cancellation and the account online has now been closed so anyone worried about o2 refresh don't it's extremely simple.

I'm not an iPhone lover (Android all the way for me!!) but I cant understand why this deal isnt hot......

is there anyway to pay the phone cost monthly after you have cancelled or do you have to pay it outright to cancel the contract?

Ive got terrible credit cant even get a sim only... think i will be accepted if i pay the device in full?

Has to be paid in full.

Do you have to take the £6 per month device payment?

I have done this as a second back up phone. If you are already with O2 you get 20% off the airtime plan anyway so brings it down to £13.20 all in a month. The lady I spoke to also said you can pay as much of the device plan as you want and then they recalculate your monthly cost.

Also worth noting you can get a like new 'perfect' one of these for £5 a month device plan if you don't mind not having the retail box. The perfect ones are literally flawless and brand new anyway.

Contract phones can be unlocked free of charge. Just go to the online chat and they will sort it out for you.

I have followed this system, - (ie put in the sim, and created an O2 online account) and I am also at that same point that I cannot unlock phone. So I called today, and the person from O2 said I have to actually use the phone first so that it registers properly on the 02 network, and then 24/48 hrs later I should be able to unlock, and if not to call them back.

I do not want to cancel my airtime contract and pay off thee balance of the phone until I know for sure the phone is unlocked

This is fine I guess, but it does mean because I have now had to make one call on the phone, so I have technically triggered the first month airtime plan, and wonder of I will get charged this first month airtime plan when I cancel the contract in next day or so.

The airtime plan was already running when you received the phone so making the call wont have made any difference - the worse they can do is charge you for the days you had the phone before cancelling (it would be pro-rata dependent on the monthly airtime plan charge (so 4 days at £15 per month would be £2) or possibly charge for the calls made which if only a minute or 2 should be a negligible cost. Having said that they don't appear to either of those things (or at least they didn't the previous 2 times I have bought a phone this way).

Here is the email I got from O2 when I tried to unlock, and which led to me to calling them. The O2 person said the phone needs to show up on the O2 network for the unlock to proceed, and asked me to make a call, and to try again in 24hrs.

What were the events thereafter? I'm at the stage you were at 5 days ago. Received iphone today around 2pm. Made a call. IMEI then immediately showed up in the unlock page of my o2 account (unlock request button unavailable until that point). Pressed the button to request unlock. Got an email around 8pm identical to yours. Unable to resubmit another unlock request through my o2 account (message - request has already been submitted).

Sorted now - i just needed to wait an extra 24 hours - the next day the unlock request form was refreshed, and so i did it again, and this time it did get unlocked. So I guess just have to wait 24 hrs after first using the phone to allow it to register fully on the O2 network before it can be unlocked.

This now shows 2 weeks and 3 weeks delivery online, but for anyone after it the stores still seem to have stock.

Got 2 in Glasgow Argyle St today and was honest with the salesperson telling him id be cancelling the airtime on Monday and he was fine about it and even gave me the number to ring.

But if anyone wants it id move fast as he said he expected the stores to have their stock recalled soon as they dont even have 5s on display now

Only needed a debit card as id

I bought this last week for my niece for xmas. Tried making a call. The unlock your device but is still not showing online. Its been 24 hours but still no joy. Any ideas? live chat seem to think its going to take 7 days! Obviously this was meant to be a christmas present so thats not ideal..

Cheers
