Not to start a fanboy war, but i've got friends with the latest samsung and honestly, 2gb or 3gb ram androids don't beat the iPhone. Specs look great on paper, but Apple manage to get full performance out of the hardware they use, so a 3gb android wouldn't necessarily be better than the iPhone. The only thing I like about some of the newer androids is the very fast touch-unlock functionality, but once you're in the phone, that's it. And in terms of security, the iPhone wins hands down. That being said, this is a rather expensive device, but look at the Samsung S7 and Blackberry Priv, they're not exactly cheap either.

Hot for me. This is the best price around and also an added bonus of additional years warranty.

I wish people would vote at a deal it terms of whether it's a best price you can get something rather than their personal grudges against a company.

Why do so many people on the internet care so passionately about what mobile phone other people buy?

Why does someone else choosing to buy a different phone to you bother you so much that you have to post your displeasure on internet forums? Does it really affect you that much? Are you so insecure in your own product choice that you need other people to buy the same as you, just to validate it?

If someone has £600 to spend on a high-end phone, whether they choose to buy a Samsung, an Apple, a Sony or any other brand shouldn't bother you in the slightest. You're not the one who has to use it. You're not the one who is now £600 less well off.

Would you go up to people in the supermarket and say: "What an idiot you are for buying that brand of washing powder - you should buy this one - it's half the price and washes your clothes so much better!" - I assume not...

Just let people buy whatever they want with their own money. If someone asks you for your advice in choosing a phone, give them your opinion, but don't try to persuade random strangers on internet forums. People are different, they have different needs, preferences and differing opinions on value. If everyone thought the same as you - the world would be a very boring place.

Nope, pounds, our currency is pounds

Decent deal but I think I did slightly better with the upgrade offer I got from EE. Paying 29.99 per month for this phone and Unlt Mins, Unlt Texts and 4Gb of data. Assuming I'd purchased this that makes the contract 599/24 = 24.96. 29.99 - 24.96 = £5.03 pm and the phone interest free for 24 months.

There seems to be some confusion about whether iphones from JL lock to first network or not. When I was considering a previous iPhone deal few months ago, I rang JL to ask, and both online CS and the instore staff said they didn't know!
Hopefully they have found out by now

Phones from some suppliers look to the first SIM but phones from KRCS, John Lewis and eBuyer definitely don't. It's not true that they *have* to be from the Apple Store to be truly unlocked rather than 'SIM free' anymore, though this did used to be the case.
  17. JRA's avatar
Just to be clear, JL have ZERO way to dictate the lock policy - it isn't up to them.

    Here's how it works:

Apple maintain a database of IMEI's and each entry has a field for lock status.

Apple's range of IMEI's have a lock status of "unlocked"

EVERY OTHER IPHONE leaves Apple with a status of "lock on first SIM"

When a SIM is inserted, it contacts Apple to report the SIMs carrier ID and request activation. If the status is 'unlocked', the request is approved and nothing else happens. If the current status is 'lockonfirstSIM' then the database record is updated to the current SIM's carrier ID and future activation requests will only be approved if the future SIM's Network ID matches.

HOWEVER, a carrier (with approved access to Apple's Activation Server API's) can send a request to update a phones status to "unlatched" IF if their network ID matches the network ID that the handset is currently locked to, or is the network ID that purchased that batch of iPhones.

GiffGaff, for example, will send such un-latching requests to Apple automatically as soon as they receive the list of IMEI's for the batch of iPhones they've ordered. This is how they are selling what, to the consumer, appears to be a 'factory' unlocked iPhone (and is as good as one,
    btw).

Now, JL are NOT a carrier and so will not have access to the API. They do, however, partner with Vodafone so perhaps have an agreement for them to do this.

The point is that the only phones to leave apple's warehouses unlocked are Apple's.

Get it in writing from any other supplier that the phone is unlatched (as GiffGaff make a point of advertising) before purchase.

Where there is ambiguity (like with JL, who don't state either way - other than 'SIM Free', which doesn't mean a thing!), you should proceed with caution and don't take anybody's opinion (either way) on here as a guarantee.

iPhones bought from Carphone Warehouse do lock to the first SIM used to … iPhones bought from Carphone Warehouse do lock to the first SIM used to activate the handset however John Lewis iPhones are just like those bought from Apple and are completely unlocked and will not lock to first SIM used.

    That's not correct.

The only phones that are truly factory unlocked are Apple's.

If, for example, you put a Three SIM in first, it will register the first network on Apple's registration servers as Three, but as Three have a no-lock policy the phone's record at Apple will be immediately updated to unlocked.

Try putting an O2 SIM in first instead and see what happens!
