Most people find it hard to tell the difference and I’d personally prefer a later model with better processor and battery but everyone to their own

iPhone 11 has a newer processor, better cameras, night mode, higher resolution front facing camera and a better battery.

iPhone XS has a better screen, better screen to body ratio.

each to your own as to what you prioritise but I’d say the iPhone 11 would last you another year in comparison.

Would much rather buy an 11

Still expensive but it's a great phone, especially for a large OLED iPhone - 512GB pricing is barely above the 256GB which is odd. I've used one of these for a year or so now, you can get them used for a fair bit less but this is the best I've seen for new in a while.

I wouldn't say the cameras are outright 'better' on the iPhone 11, they're different. It's more what the 11 doesn't have than what it does, it also feels a lot cheaper than the XS due to the way it's built.

I would wait, can see better deals coming for the Xs max. I got one for 650 with the 20% off warehouse deals. Was used like new and it was brand new, all wrappers on in box etc so would deffo recommend checking out warehouse deals. Battery was 100% health so it’s not the same as a second hand phone that are cheaper

If you’re putting a case on it like every one should then you won’t notice a difference. The only thing you would notice would be the bezels which are thicker on the 11. When you come and sell it on in the future it will get more because it’s a newer model and will get more update

The cameras are outright better on the 11 generation IMHO. I can happily say this, having owned an XS Max for six months and an XR for five months - better, less smeary image processing in mid to low light, night mode, much more reliable handling of light contrast in difficult scenes. The XS is by no means a bad camera phone but I’ve been so blown away with the camera on the 11 Pro Max that I haven’t swapped SIMs since I got mine on launch day.

Add to this that the 11 series has much better battery life and a newer generation of processor and really I think unless you’re after OLED or the stainless steel frame then the 11 is a better package. I’d always go for the newer generation unless there’s a solid reason not to, and having used the XR for a pretty long time I never had any concerns about the comparatively low resolution IPS panel. I’m now on an 11 Pro Max due to my Annual Upgrade plan but if the price hadn’t been the same for both I would have had no issue with continuing to use the IPS model with the standard 11. I also think the wide angle lens is a much more useful option, and I can count on the fingers of one hand the times I’ve used the telephoto lens on my 11 Pro since September.

Honestly, go for brand new. Especially places like Amazon, Argos and JL who all have decent customer services. If you want to get the price down, consider the 256GB and transfer your videos (they tend to be the largest files on a phone) on to your laptop / PC. I use a wireless transfer app called Wi-Fi Transfer Pro and it’s brilliant (worth the £4.99). Just my thoughts
I have a brand new sealed IPhone XS Max 256gb Unlocked Space Gray for £800 or a brand new sealed 512gb Unlocked Gold for £850. Both come with Apple warranty.
