Ipods are junk. Junk sound quality wise and junk battery wise. In total, the total sum of the product is junk. I do not understand why it is so popular.

If you want the #1 criteria for a music device , which is sound quality get a Cowen D2, or wait for the D3 coming out very soon.

D.

cheers for that link Sylar.

didnt know there was new ones coming out.

Ive just got a £99 Apple voucher to be used in store. So, ill hold off until September then and get myself a new one. Battery life isnt a problem for me. Its always plugged into the car through the head unit sitting in the glove compartment, so its always powered

absolute rubbish ....

junk sound quality .... I've owned lots of MP3 players from cheap to expensive, and I have to say my 5.5G IPOD sounds better than all of them

use 5.5G IPOD into a pair of PX100s and it sounds sublime, all my files are in Apple Lossless

sounds even better via line-out and portable amp

so junk sound quality - compared to what ? a Bryston cd player !

You don't know what your talking about, just like all the other IPODbots. Even the gadget show stated that the D2 had the best sound quality they had ever heard from an audio playback device, supporting wma, mp3, ogg and ape and flac lossless formats.

Voted hot ! have bought a refurbed iPod before and was like new. As for sound quality it is ace with a set of Bose IEs and battery in mine is AOK !

sound quality maybe number 1, but most people would buy based on 4 things - sound, storage, battery & price. you may get better sound & battery (although this is probably only 10hrs more & the cowon are flash not harddrive) but on the other 2 it fails. 8GB D2 is £130, for £15 less i can get an extra 72GB! 10 times the storage!

i have to say i wasnt into ipods when they first came out. i had a sony nw-hdhs, 30GB (until it got stolen :x) and felt that it was better than the ipods. but as sony no longer do harddrive mp3s i've gone for ipod. seems the best of the rest for the price!

FYI i got the 160GB (usa import so no sound limit!) from ebuyer in march for £193, its now up to £240!

I owned a Samsung K5 which at the time was meant to have the best sound quality - and I preferred the IPOD - YMMV

People who use their MP3 players less may also prefer iPods because of their ease of use. Also, since iPods are so popular, there are a massive range of accessories that no other MP3 can match.

Oh, and just to let you guys know, this being a refurb model would mean you won't get the original boxing as I didn't. I also didn't get Dock adapter and the slip case (which isn't included anymore anyway). However, the iPod was wrapped in its stuff. But maybe things have changed :).

Hope this helps.

yeah it seems like everything now comes with ipod dock!

i agree, i do find it easy to use but there a few annoying hings like the coverflow splitting albums up if you have duets etc, butit then still plays the full album! i like the idea of it but dont use it because of thisproblem

1. New ipods come out every september. This year will be no different.
2. iPods do have average sound quality if you sit in a silent room and do a sound test against other mp3 players, but how this matters when sat on a noisy bus on the way to work is beyond me. You wont be able to make out any difference.
3. If you are questioning why iPods ever became the number 1 then frankly you need to read up on mp3 players. When the iPod came out it was the only player on the market that was easy to use and had a large enough capacity that it made other portable formats like minidisk obsolete.
4. If you are questioning why you should still use an iPod in this day and age when the competitors have finally gotten their acts together, it's because iTunes is still probably the best mp3 application out there, and because the iPod is so popular there is a huge eco system of accessories built around it.

Err, are you sure about this? Im pretty neutral when it comes to ipods, but iTunes is a truly awful program.

not that much of a hot deal....... you can get a brand new one for £126, Id rather pay an extra £11 and have a brand new shiny 80g ipod

i partly agree. i was used to sonicstage (sony) and that had a couple of flaws but was far better at the basics than itunes, namely getting the songs & album info right! also i used it ALOT to make MP3 discs for the car, where itunes just doesnt seem to allow. however i do like the itunes store. well everything except most of the prices! :w00t:

The coverflow issue makes me feel sick sometimes. It's a full time job keeping it correct, especially as you can't see the problems until you disconnect the ipod.

Even albums with matching tags and the compilation option ticked can appear a dozen times :x

Having never used the Sonic Stage software myself, I can't say its my opinion, but from reading various sources, I have heard that SonicStage is fairly bad. I use iTunes, which I find pretty easy to use to sort my music out.

just so you know, if you find any albums that are listed multiple times, go into the 'get info' on the offending track and delete the album artist, should do the trick

also the battery life on the classic is impressive, sound quality is lacking a bit in the midrange, apple introduced a 'dance' setting which helped the bass response and midrange a little, although i'll be tempted if the touch receives a significant pricedrop!

Given that most consumers still use the piece of *** earphones provided in the box, it really doesnt matter to them how it sounds it appears(!).

As for the Ipod classic poor sound quality, utter ********.

the version i used with my hdh5 was fine. did the baics well. then got the missus oe o the new ones and they'd added this thing called artist link. seemed a good idea but didnt really work unless you had loads of songs on!
one thing i want to ipod to do is arange songs by year. just wanna go back to 96! LOL also how do you rate your songs? ipod gives it marks out of 5 but i use these to mean 1 star = 6/10, 5 stars = 10/10

The short answer is I don't! I didn't when I started my music library and its too much effort to now start and rate thousands of songs. My way around this is just to use most played or to chuck favourites off each album into a playlist.

Nobody buys apple products for their sound quality and Itunes is an abomination, still wouldn't swap my iphone for anything

Just to add, yes as you say, delete the "album artist" but in the case of compilations the artist can still be entered in the "artist" field and the "part of complitation" tick box has to be ticked to make it show a single album cover.

jeez they all went pretty fast... does anyone know if the refurbished section gets updated regularly (as they come in) or if its just once every 2 months or something. Was wanting to get an ipod touch for starting uni

noob;2761328

Oh really, where?
Cheapest I have seen is £141 from The Link.

As someone who has recently bought an iPod classic, I have to say I was extremely disappointed with the sound quality. Prior to my iPod I had a Creative Zen Vision M, and the sound quality is impeccable, as soon as I bought an iPod, the sound quality was very distinguishable between the two, the iPod made it sound like the MP3's were recorded at a much lower bitrate. I have also read up on the issue, and this is what someone else has also concluded by comparing the soundwaves of differing iPods. Supposedly the problem is down to the change of chips between 5G and 6G iPods (from Wolfson chips to Cirrus).

homepage.mac.com/mar…tml

I love the smart playlist feature, and the navigation is impeccable, but if you're after sound quality, I'd steer well clear of the iPod Classic in its current form and wait to see some reviews of the 7G iPod. To be honest, the sound quality issue is unforgiveable, I don't see how the iPod in its current guise managed to allude QA on the first round. My ears spotted something wrong with one of the first tracks I listened to, and now I'm stuck with something I regret, but looks pretty, kind of like a baywatch babe, all figure no brains.

I've used just about every mp3 out there since the early days of using Winamp with songs from Napster. I've been beta testing Songbird since it very first came out and I've tried all the different apps on Linux too (The new version of Banshee is very promising).

Of all of them, iTunes IMO is the best all round app for every day users who just wanna get on with listening to their music. Its easy to use, it looks nice, it will do podcasts very well, it's very easy to get album artwork either automatically or adding them manually. Really my only complaint is that it is a little slow under Windows, but all the Apple apps are a little slow under Windows. I guess the solution is to get a Mac, but let me guess you probably hate them as well?

But let me say this... If you think another app out there is better than iTunes then fair enough I'm not so big headed as to think my opinion is the only one possible, but I simply don't believe that iTunes is anything less than "pretty good". To make out like its absolutely hideous and its the worst thing out there is just dumb. Its got enough going for it that an objective, rational opinion will see that its far from the worst out there, its actually pretty good.

I listen to podcasts while I'm at work and I agree with the post above - there is no better for auto-podcast snycing than Itunes

Well i personally don't like Itunes, probably because its so slow on Windows, and I don't intend on buying a Mac. Winamp is my favourite, runs extremely well. And Ipods sound quality is noticeable, my mate at work was comparing his ipod to my creative zen, with the same songs and bitrate and his sounded noticeably lower quality.

As far as I can make out you can only burn songs contained within a playlist but you can do the format that you want.

Go to EDIT > PREFERENCES > ADVANCED tab > BURNING tab > there you can choose MP3 CD / AUDIO CD / DATA CD

Make a playlist > Right click it and choose BURN PLAYLIST TO CD

iTunes is pure win, imho, it's personal preference, running on a Pentium D w 2GB RAM fine
