Only live broadcast TV requires a license. You can watch pre-recorded and on demand content.

Couldn't they before your posting? I haven't seen an ITV programme in years but I thought I saw a free ITV on Demand iOS app the other day.

If it is broadcast on the web at the same time as it is broadcast on TV it is considered as live and you do need a license, and delay of a second or two doesn't count as not live

there is a slight delay online

It actually needs to be time shifted by 2 hours to count as not a live broadcast according to the BBC.

But the ITV player site has plenty of content that isn't 'live'. Just don't click the 'watch live' link at the top.

You're more then entitled to watch shows from the BBC iPlayer, 4OD, 5Live, ITVPlayer, Netflix, NowTV, or YouTube and many other streaming services without the need for BBC's TV license. You don't need a license to watch DVD/Blurays of Movies or TV shows, nor do you need a BBC TV license for game consoles.

In fact, you don't even need to reply to any letters the BBC sends to your house nor do the BBC's agents have any rights to be on your property, be it you rent or own.

Tv license is only for BBC. ITV is a commercial channel therefore the license fee is not applicable. Having said that, you can't just have ITV and not pay.

Brrrrr chilly!

Surely the worst post ever ? (And why can't you use tv catchup which has all channels ??)

Catch up is perfectly legal online without a licence it is only simulcast (being broadcast at the same time) that needs a licence. I watch TV legally for a good couple of years without a licence. I was even watching something on iPlayer the BBC licencing came to check and there was nothing he could do. :-) Disappointed these days since actually getting a licence and a TV package.

I thought it was a case , if your tv is capable of receiving a broadcasting signal , you were required by law to have a license , or was that never the case ?

always thought it was only bbc that you needed a license for as the other channels get paid for by the advertisements they put on during the breaks, but bbc only get revenue from the licensed that people were forced to buy to watch tv, lot of people going to take advantage of the new rules now and its not a criminal offence now Not too have tv licence, and they not have the right to enter your home now either GOOOOOOOD,

no that's not the case, even the BBC's website gives you the info albeit slightly hidden.

It was never the case. The BBC just liked to bully people into believing it.

they never did have the right to enter your property without a court warrant and a police officer in attendance. It never ever happened.

Anything received through your tv (or other tuner) that is a scheduled (live broadcast even if it's a repeat) or if you watch online a "live stream" then you need a tv licence (irrespective of the channel choice).

Anything on a catchup service does not require a tv licence

That said ITV has very poor catchup programmes (hardly anything after 7pm except probably soaps) is missing. Only BBC and 4OD seem to offer a decent catchup service IMHO

And yes the BBC should stop spending billions on producing "overseas broadcasting content" where they get no revenue and stick to what they do best (news/documentaries and the occasional drama) for the tv licence payer or if not then start adverts etc and stop asking the UK population to fund "overseas broadcasting content" and big payouts to sacked executives.

simply not the case every month there is a debate about this on hukd and so many people still dont know the law even when its on the bbc website catchup tv weather its by an app on your smart tv ps3 xbox any other console iphone any tablet any pc or mac any device really it does not matter if your device is capable of receiving or not as long as your not watching live tv a time lapse of approx 2 hours then you can watch any catch up site there is best thing is take the aerial out and just connect via internet dont click any live tv button and your legal simple as that

Might as well say "free itv bbc c4 and c5 if you own a tv"
