Hahah I have the first gen and for its size I'm impressed.
What makes this so bad?
Agreed.
I got the first, and for its size, when placed near a corner, the sound is astounding.
I really wasn't expecting too much. And, V2 seems to get even better reviews.
For the size, it's great to take on holiday, play my podcast / radio thru when doing the gardening etc
I have this speaker and for the money it's superb, charge lasts ages and sound quality is great for such as small speaker
Does this knock out enough volume for sitting outside in Summer or not?
No sniggering but I stuck ours in a bucket, and it acted like a bass bin.
Made a HUGE difference outdoors.
Without...you'd hear it, but.... yeah...

Unfortunately there is no easy substitute for box size when trying to recreate bass and this is the biggest letdown on a lot of Bluetooth portable speakers. It's always a compromise between size and portability.

It looks however like you've solved the Bass problem but how about this design...
