Google Assistant speaker waterproof and portable with Bluetooth too

I think the only thing worse than google home is missing making calls if that's important to you

Hi guys. I got one of these when it was reduced last time and have to say it's well worth the money, if you plan to use it to listen to music. The google assistant won't work if you're away from your home wifi, unless you set your phones wifi hotspot name and password exactly the same as your home network, then it connects automatically and behaves as if you're at home.

I made a video review and a seperate one comparing it to the home and home mini, thought this might help somebody undecided on whether to make the purchase...

Do you know why it doesn't do calls, I was under the impression they were the same as the Google home. Is is just a case of waiting for an update? Thanks

Hi, I did read somewhere that yes it would be an update that rolls out. Can't find where I read it but it's a google assistant feature so they wouldn't keep it to just the google branded lines. Not sure when though
I just popped to Currys to have a listen and it didn't sound very good
Is it actually worth £75?

Yes, 100%. As long as you intend to use it to play music, otherwise just get a home mini for £34. This serves as a good android assistant enabled portable home speaker, and doubles as a rugged, waterproof bluetooth speaker that you can take out and about. Very surprised this isn't getting a lot more heat by now, this is a great deal
Nice thank you OP
How this compare to jbl flip?
Is this a Nikon or Canon Le ... oh wait

No, the free calls are a Google Home Feature, not a Google Assistant feature.

Same for Alexa (in the US): the Amazon devices can place free calls to landline and mobiles but Alexa enabled Smart Speakers don't.

Thanks mate, just a Samsung S7. DId play around with microphones and DSLR for a bit but the S7 is just easy & quality is ok enough
I have one of them too, and have to say they are terrible, If connected via BT speaker keeps disconnecting from BT every minute or so. Tried with 2 different phones and also PC , same thing . Also this speaker does not have any inputs so you are only relying on BT connection.
When if playing video on youtube there is about 1-2 second lag and it is so annoying, JBL responded to it '' that this speaker is not for youtube videos to watch''

Not sure if there is an update somewhere and not sure on how can I check my software version as I like sound and built quality but Connection is terrible.
Is the Google Assistant the voice activated one or do you have to press the button to start it?

Thanks mate.. gonna pick one up tomorrow hopefully!
Do not buy this. I have one, as well as 2 Google Homes.
What they don't tell you is that the version of Google Assistant on this is old. They won't tell you how old but at least a year. SO any features Google has added in the last year won't work. Not just the very latest features like making phone calls but sending broadcasts and accessing services. They have an update they are 'hoping to release sometime this year' but it will bring it in line with Google Assistant version of December last year so by the time it gets here you will be a year out of date not 2 years.
You also won't be able to return it as it won't actually be faulty.
So if you want a portable version of Google Home with a battery life of under 4 hours and less features then by all means spend your money.

Yep sounds pointless, you may as well just buy a BT speaker, if assistant is not even going to get updated
