That review is assuming it's a £650 bike.

If the review was run again assuming a £350 price tag it would be a lot better.

Agreed. You normally can't get Trek bikes via mail order.
I used to own a Tiagra specced version of this. Very nice entry level bike. Got me hooked on road cycling.
£350 seems a reasonable value for this sort of bike these days. You're getting a very nice frameset. Wheels and finishing kit are very basic though. As you would expect in this price range. But once you put some nicer wheels and decent tyres and brake pads it will serve as well as any alloy road bike.
Also buying Trek gives you good resale value.

Original Poster

Also Trek don't allow mail order. They insist all their bikes are built professionally and handed over in person.

56cm is medium and that's in stock. I'm picking up one.

I got an 8fun front hub motor kit with a 9amp/hr battery........ cost about £400, but this was about 4/5 years ago now. I'm still using it so its been really reliable, but you can get better, more torque, and more efficient systems now. I would prob go crank drive if i bought a kit again.
Ebikes, and Ekits take a lot of research to get what you want, everyone has different requirements....;. try the Ebike forums, Pedelecs, Endless Sphere and even some cycle forums have a Ebike section.

Everyone uses them, it's the best way to get around. I bought a decent one for £230 and it goes much quicker than 25km/h. Blimey. You could make a killing selling the xiaomi scooter for that price on here!

I have the trp spyre and they have been far better since I replaced the pads to Shimano deore pads wiggle.co.uk/shi…ds/
£7 a set, the spyres are meant to be even better with swissstop pads £18 a set.

for the bling I also added icetech rotors on, and I'm sure they make a big different over the regular rotors and I lost around 70-80 grams over the old rotors and CL adaptor,

they havent got the power of Xt m8000 or even slx mountain bike brakes but they stop ok.
the 105 and ultagra Shimano hydraulics are £250/£300 on Merlin cycles if you fancy an upgrade

You can make adjustments to saddle height and position (fore/aft) if necessary you can add a longer or shorter stem and adjust bar angle to give optimum position. Each bike frame is different so difficult to be categorical about which frame size fits which body but 1cm should be negotiable. General rule is that it's easier to make a small bike bigger than a big bike smaller.

I'd go for this one - absolute bargain at the price £399. Sizes are limited but stores might have other options. Was awarded budget bike of the year and commuter bike of the year 2015-2016. Takes mudguards, panniers, wider tyres. A good first bike that will get you started and keep you going until you decide if you want/need to upgrade at some point in the future.

Why? (mine has them and you have me worried)

I know several people who've had difficulties with them and found themselves suddenly with non-stopping brakes in wet, nasty conditions. I was on a ride when this happened to a friend. Took a mechanic who was with us a good while to adjust them so they worked. He said he'd seen the same thing on a lot of mechanical discs which easily go out of adjustment and he wouldn't ride a bike with them fitted. Another experienced chap on the same ride said he'd rejected his bike with mechanical discs as, after a week of riding, he considered it unsafe. Both said they'd be happy with hydraulic discs or rim brakes but not mechanical. I've heard the same from several other riders subsequently. My bikes have rim brakes and they always work fine. Just trying to warn folks as , to me, safety is the number one concern in cycling and I wouldn't want to find my brakes (or anyone else's!) failing at the wrong time.

Can anyone recommend a bike within 500 pounds with a size small frame (51-53cm), road/cx for commuting.

I've just received my rack and since the deal is still live I thought I should give my first impressions...

It seems very solid with thick welds which hopefully will stand the test of time. Although the alloy looks thick it feels lightweight (though I don't have any other rack to compare it to). The colour is a lot lighter than it shows in the picture and is more what I'd call a matt silver. It came with a black plastic covering which fits over the adjustable brackets near the front. HOWEVER, and even though the website says it comes with bolts to attach to most frames, there were none with mine.

Other than the missing bolts, I'm very happy with it.
