Sorry 800gms

Tried several different shops' Jersey Royals this season and none of them have had that 'special' JR taste. They need to be good to justify the high price. Are they growing too many at the expense of quality?

I bought some in tesco the other week and they were lovely, had some left and ate them a couple of days later but they just didn't taste the same as first day so maybe you are right, but really expensive so that was a one off for me, at the price £3.00. Don't mind paying £1.50 though maybe they will be tasty.

never heard of those ones

Jersey Royal is a marketing name so there are always lots of marketing promotions going on with these, and I noticed M&S had something similar this morning. The actual variety can vary too so, besides the skill or otherwise of the grower and the season, there may well be differences in taste and flavour, particularly since the marketing people can push these spuds out too early. Most of the Jersey crop are a variety called International Kidney or are closely related. Frankly, I think Maris Peer or Charlotte are just as good or better in the case of Charlotte. Watch out later for the strangely shaped Pink Fir Apple if you want a potato with real flavour.

Sainsbury's usually do a value range pack of Charlotte potatoes... somewhat mis-sized (Charlottes are sold usually as salad potatoes but good hot too), but good value

wait till cheshire potatoes become available and buy a sack of 56lb for £5.

You obviously don't know what we are talking about!
Mainstream heavy cropping potatoes are not quite the same thing, fine if you ant to make a pile of chips, but not a competitor to Jersey Royals!

JR's are nothing special IMO

I agree that some years they aren't, but when they are right, they take a bit of beating.

That said, I do tend to buy Charlottes often as they are much more available, and for much of the year, and have a very waxy texture and good flavour, albeit missing the colour of the Jersey Royals..

The ones that you scrape yourself are better, the pre-cleaned ones don't seem as good to me

Wash them cook them and eat them.
Life is too short to scrape potatoes, and remove the taste and the nutrition from them in the process!

Lidl had 500g for 99p this morning (similar value as this deal but were not claiming they are half price), but i know they were 69p last year at Aldi. The original CO-OP founders must be turning in their graves. I'll wait until they are more reasonably priced.
