sorted byLots of material, lots of demand, and not straightfoward to make a good quality one. They are full of internal stitching to keep their shape when filled with high pressure air, and they're going to get used in the sea and in rivers, bumping against stones and things, by people weighting 100kg (or less, but with their child or dog) , being flexed about by the waves, and if they pop or deflate etc could leave the user in a very dangerous situation, meaning very bad press and possibly legal issues. So the manufacturers who are trying to be a trusted brand with a quality product actually put a lot of effort in.
Cheaper ones certainly are available - I have the lidl one and it's good enough - but it's horses for courses. A random Chinese import doesn't have the same sort of branding and warranty and accountability as Jobe or Red Paddle etc. If you want affordable "brands" - aquaplanet, twobarefeet, or HIKS might be worth looking at. Mine arrived today, nice board, very light. It is the 2020 model, but great value at the price. I have a bluefin cruise too, will compare them on the water next week...
I was getting a bit worried about despatch taking so long...
Replying to
I just got the 2021 version for £759 and kicking myself now.
Thanks for posting!
Unfortunately, whilst there may be some rare exceptions, almost everything these days is the same stuff made in China, probably in the same factory, just with different branding on it.
In recent years I have come to learn that buying a supposedly decent "brand" is pointless. It's all the same stuff most of the time. (edited)
Does anyone know if Costco are sending the 2020 or 2021 version, looks like still a good price for the 2020 version but the 2021 would be a bonus.
Single large fin is better for straight line tracking/flat water. 3 fin setup is better for surfing.
Stability is more about width and volume of the board.
I was choosing between sandbanks and Hatha but went for the Hatha as they have extra bungees at the back too!
Mines also just arrived, can also confirm it’s the 2020 model. Let us know how it compares to the Bluefin, as my Amazon order for that is still coming. I’m thinking the Jobe should be better, as it’s longer and more stable, plus it takes a heavier weight (I’m 115kg).
Enjoy
Thanks really explains and helps me make a choice on what to get
Yes and no. A lot of production is outsourced abroad but different companies will go to different lengths for quality control. Did the factory build it the way you designed it, or did they cut corners? Are they conducting testing during batch production to check everything is as it should be, or are they waiting for the customers to find out the hard way?
You're not wrong that for consumer products a whole there is a lot of western branding just slapped the same basic product sourced from the same design or even factory, but it's not entirely fair to say that this is always the case or that every parent company does the same thing.
The 2021 version is very nice though, love the colours!
I bought a Hatha for £100 more than this and might have gone for this if I hadn’t!
I’m no expert but Jobe get a very good name
I guess. I think its far more widespread than most realise though, to the point of big well established brands with a reputation for quality just rebranding the same mass produced stuff everyone else sells.
I ordered an oddpaddle 11.6 ft touring sup with a full package of kayak seat, double paddle extension, lifejacket etc for £250 off a random business seller from ebay and so far (having used it everyday for the past 4 days) it's been awesome and seems just as good as my mates £500 one.
I guess time will tell on its longevity (so I may be eating my words eventually), but I'm really wondering if the price of some of the supposed quality brands are worth it (and that goes for almost everything, not just paddleboards). (edited)
You will pay a brand premium
And also be paying for a business that presumably pays UK tax etc - has UK staff - and so a much higher tax base
Some of that can translate to getting proper support here - repair or replacement under warranty - although I have no experience of SUPs in particular
Personally I'd prefer to get it from Amazon and worry less about the brand - as Amazon should just refund me if there are issues. Failing that eBay or a brand that people report have a good warranty service.
Fitbit and Philips products are made in China (Generally are unique) but I've read they just replace them if there are issues, even out or warranty. They can likely do that as they charge a lot. And their brand and reputation is valuable to them
Also the same factory can produce different grades of the same design and product - both intentionally and as a byproduct of the manufacturing process.
For example I believe some German manufacturers of tools etc have higher quality control standards for their own top brand, and those that meet lower thresholds - have too much play, are outside of their tolerances go to their own or another companies lower brand
Hence same design, same factory even, but a cheaper and not the best product.
There are diminishing returns the more you spend. So those "seconds" could well be good enough, but yeah
With the Chinese stuff you can normally spot the generic design stuff. Some of it is fine (again no SUP experience here)
You can also look at features
When I looked at SUPs I saw some are dual layered. Even some pricey ones aren't. Personally I'd want to have a dual layered one I think, provided it's got decent reviews, looks like a decent brand and the warranty is good or it's fulfilled by Amazon (edited)
can you share link what did you buy please?
2021 at that price would be amazing wouldn’t it!
think its this one
ebay.co.uk/itm…543
heard they are good and includes warranty
Wouldn't be surprised if they are rebranded boards with slight changes to it. Anything made in China always has risk of the product being copied and sold for cheaper.
*edit* just got a notification for deluvery on the 24th. (edited)
Yes you do, it’s about £40 a year. You get fined if caught, but realistically it’s barely policed
been looking at this vs sandbanks style
