Following on from 2002s Redemptions Son Joseph Arthur now returns with his fourth album, Our Shadows Will Remain. When the record was released in the US late last year, publications including it in their Best Of 2004 lists included Entertainment Weekly, The Wall St. Journal and The New York Post. While touring his new record, Joseph has opened for REM, Wilco, and most recently, Coldplay. Michael Stipe was generous enough to introduce me every night, he says. With that foot in the door, all I had to do was deliver.

Delivering, its clear, is something Joseph Arthur excels at. Fans will recognise Our Shadows as the latest in a series of great Joseph Arthur records, but its concise, too, and thus an ideal starting point for the uninitiated. Spend time with Our Shadows, and youll become acquainted with a world of rich textures, deftly arranged vocals and subtly compelling melodies. If Echo Park doesnt move you, we respectively suggest you check your pulse, whilst Failed is deliciously woozy in feel and indicative of how Joseph likes to marry his warm baritone with his own rich falsetto; Devils Broom is barbed and candid, our host intoning, Waking up with my face down on the pavement / Everything that I own in a garbage bag. Elsewhere, too, Joseph files pointed couplets that keep the listener guessing: The plants have died / my hair has grown / from the thought of you coming home, he sings on A Smile That Explodes.

Sometimes edgy, sometimes achingly beautiful, Our Shadows Will Remain packs tuneful exorcisms, beguiling epiphanies and potent snapshots of a heart laid bare, and highlights Joseph Arthur as a talent that should be seen and heard by everyone.
