Seems like a decent price, cheapest I can see. Been eyeing it up for a few weeks, just bit the bullet with this nice £40 off!

I was so close to buying one of these a few weeks ago. In the end I bought a full Android head unit ...

And it's utterly brilliant. Hope the JVC unit is good, enjoy.
Heated for good price.

Carplay wasn't good enough for me, very limited in what it allows you to do, for example won't support google maps only apple maps, won't read whatsapps only imessages etc and the lack of proper integration with your car controls is annoying. Maybe the Android Auto is better if you use an Android phone.

Carplay units like this one annoyingly tend to not feature a big easy flippin volume knob favouring silly tiny buttons like this one so its best if you get it working with steering wheel controls if you have them. Dangerous, eyes off the road constantly trying to get functions to work.

Carplay and apple music with Siri is a great combo though, excellent sound quality. I only used that and handsfree calling. Getting Siri to transcribe an error free message to someone is very difficult, you have to simplify your language and talk like a whale.

Carplay is now going wireless on new units, bear in mind this unit requires you to plug your phone in for it to work but you probably would to charge it anyway and this is a cheap unit. Also you might expect it to have a cd player and DAB radio, it does not.

Thanks for this info, making me rethink my choice now!

Picture is a Android Auto display ???

Oh shame Apple allows no WhatsApp support period, trick for Android peeps, install that dreadful Google Hangouts and e voila you can also reply by voice and it works every well.

I didn't actually provide any solutions to the issues though sorry. I think some brand new cars with cutting edge infotainment systems, dedicated sat nav AND carplay compatibility can be your best bet but since that is not always an option, these units are ok / best available, just not perfect. Apple need to add more functionality and app develepers and manufacturers need to cooperate more to give users what they want. I found it hard to find good info on carplay from people who actually live with the systems so thought I'd share my experience. Would love to know if android auto is any better for android users, I suspect there are similar issues.

Dont let me put u off, i actually had the very similar pioneer unit but carplay is the same and the units almost identical. What car are you putting it in? The higher up the screen in the dash the better when using maps, it was a bit low in my car. I now have a newer car without carplay but a steering wheel button that activates Siri and I find I don't miss the rest of the carplay features. However the good thing is that when apple finally get their act together and improve carplay you should be all set, no need for more hardware as it is just a screen, your phone does all the work.

Yeah not the highest but more than enough for a car stereo. I've played around with android car stereo's for years and these new Intel Sofia chipset models with 2gb ram are really really good. Fast to use, instant on with car and very user friendly.

Any units that are compatible with Google maps?

The one i posted from Amazon runs a full Android install, its compatible with any android app. I have TomTom and Google Maps for navigation, Spotify, Google Play music and Amazon for Music etc...

This one but only if you use it with a compatible Android phone. This activates android auto and runs Google maps from the phone, controlled by the unit.

BIG difference between a pumpkin running off 'Android' and a JVC running 'Android Auto'. Pumpkin is a bodge job shortcut to add functionality. Not to be confused with a branded high quality unit compatible with Android auto, specifically designed by Google to be used in cars. The features and hardware you get on a pumpkin will be cheap, glitchy, frustrating to use and short lived. Car play and android auto units update as you update your phone because they run off your phone and are far more future proof and supported and upgraded directly by Google and Apple. The pumpkin will be poorly supported by whoever made it or sells it for as long as they can be bothered.
Try before you buy, try both, in a car before you buy.

I would agree totally on pretty much all of the comments when talking about the old Android headunits..they were generally shocking quality, terrible to use and poor quality.
the newer Intel based units though are a big step up, Pumpkin also provide decent support with a dedicated support forum.
I agree though, the two really shouldn't be compared I was just pointing out that the Pumpkin units are an 'alternative' as personally after trying an android auto unit I found the lack of apps support a little limiting right now. It will improve though I'm sure.

Painfully slow progress from apple, at least pumpkin are improving their hardware and it does have a volume knob!
