Tapo just uses micro sd I believe and not the cloud to store video. Different app too.

All about preference I guess.

Alexa and Google are to control things using your voice. For exemple, you can watch this camera on your phone via the app. If you have a google or Alexa smart display and you link this camera with it, you can sau 'Alexa, show me the camera' and you'll have an image straight on your display. Another example is if yiu have a home alarm, normally you arm it via the remote control or smart phone. With Google or Alexa, you just say 'arm alarm' and the job is done. This are just simple exemples, Alexa and Google are to control smart devices with your voice, without them, you can control your smart device via your phone/tablet.

Hopefully someone can help, I'm not too sure. I've been looking at the tp link for a while as I have to app with my plugs.

But the new ring battery camera looks good, only due to no wires at all with a 2 year old about.

Ok thanks so is it correct that, we can do almost everything this other gadgets do via smartphone. I am thinking the advantage of the phone is it can be done remotely where as these devices you have too he in the same house/ or even room. Do people using these have one in each room they go too or can you just put it in your pocket like a phone, I don't fully understand it then as I am sure we can use the phone via voice commands or is these devices alot better than the phone at voice commands.
Got two of the Tapo ones that record only a SD card. Very good picture quality. The sound is a bit tinny though.

You can use them in a room to keep an eye on your baby, on an elderly person, your dog, for security reasons as an alarm (depending on cameras). You can talk back via them. You have them plugged at the mains. You use your phone remotely. The Alexa/Google devices are for convenience. For example I use smart plugs for my lamps, or smart bulbs as ceiling light. It makes sense to use them via voice, otherwise, if I use the phone to put them on, I can actually use the switch. In this case the good part with the phone is you control the lights while you are away and others may think you are at home.
I have this camera and I find it a bit of a pain. It keeps disconnecting from WiFi and I have to keep rebooting it. I bought it to keep an eye on the house when I go away, so that's just a bit of a flaw!
NO SD CARD SLOT LOL
I brought 3 last time when they had a deal, and really like them.
So been keeping an eye on them for another deal (hence the post).

I always thought that the free limited cloud storage wouldn't be enough but for me it is, when I get an alert I check the app within hours if not instantly so a few days limit storage isn't an issue (I'm not checking an alert 3 days after the fact...).

Mine have never disconnected from my network, touch wood they continue to work fine (and the new set I just brought).

Really easy to use and I'm pretty happy with the quality.

I had some Yi and Xiaomi cameras before but I never got instant notification when the app was closed for a long time... Not sure but might have just been some setting somewhere but that really irritated me.
Can this be set up on a TV screen for 24/7 CCTV viewing?
How this compares to Wyze one please anyone know ?

Tapo is more aimed at those who prefer local storage option such as micro sd. The tapo range also offers full support for RTSP & ONVIF protocol meaning you can connect the camera to a NVR to record CCTV 24/7. TP-Link have said cloud storage support is in the works to come at a later date for tapo cameras. I've jut replaced two old Foscam Cube cameras with the C200 and have been impressed so far with the quality for the price point. Planning to phase out the last two Foscam cameras I have in favour of the Tapo Spot.
Is the cloud storage free or do you need to subscribe?

You need a strong WiFi signal, this will NOT work with a mediocre or bad WiFi signal.

Works really well when you have s good WiFi signal though, we use it as an additional monitor for my boys bedroom (when the baby monitor is out of range)

Free for 2 years. Not sure after that. Perhaps you have to pay but don’t know how much

I believe that this might fit the bill a bit:

Don't know if you know but there is an option in the app to reboot every day at 3.00am. I use this and have found i have no problems with it disconnecting during the day. Might be worth a try if you haven't already done so.

I think TP-Link bought Tapo. So its an addtion to their line.

Nope from what I understand TP-Link created tapo as a sub brand around middle of last year. Tapo line of cameras are more aimed towards people who want to be in control of their data by keeping it local hence they have Micro SD slot's and support both RTSP and Onvif Protocols. Their are plans sometime in the future to offer cloud recording for Tapo cameras.

Does that mean, that via, for example, a portable HDD connected my Wi-Fi router, and that particular camera connected to my Wi-Fi router too, then I can have alllll my security camera footage recorded DIRECTLY to my portable HDD, via my Wi-Fi router as the obvious intermediary? (and probably via ofcourse, the Tapo App as well, etc?), or ... thanx.

No in my setup I have a dedicated computer running NVR server software (im using Luxriot Evo) which connects to the cameras and then records the live video feed onto the protable HDD I have connected to computer. The camera itself can only record to Micro SD but has the required ports for RTSP and Onvif enabled (Something most cloud cameras don't offer) which means you can use your own NVR software to connect to the cameras and record their live feed. My NVR server records the live feed from 4 cameras on a 24/7 basis. To be able to do what you suggest their would need to be an option on the camera to record to a network location which their isn't.

Yes you can set it to alert you and see the video on your phone. You can press the record button on the app from your phone and it records to the SD card in the camera, when you stop recording you can download the recording to your phone from the app.

No, it's a manual process. View/re-record, and then view/download. Not the best, but adequate for me (mine is not a theft monitoring usage).

I think you can view/record a live stream with VLC or similar, but I've not tried this myself and you'd need some tech skills.

The SD card slot is hidden below the camera lens you cannot see it in normal operation. But yes someone could nick the camera if it isn't screwed down, but burglars would find a way to remove it. Apparently TP-Link Tapo are considering offering a cloud based service in the future.
