As an alternative, AVG is Free

I always use AVG now after horror experiences with Norton.

AVG (which I use and like) came out at 83% as opposed to Kaspersky's 98% (it was the 7.0 version used in the test)

The best free one was Avira Personal at 92%, so if you want the best it is Kaspersky.

Oh thanks for the correction barney, I forgot it was 7.0 not 6.0. I assume the older version is around the same though.

I had heard that Avira started charging very shortly after the study...? Could be wrong however.

I assume you should be able to upgrade to version 7 from 6 for free when you register the product (I may be wrong as I haven't tried).

Avira still seems to be free

]Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Premium

No, you pay for upgrade.

I use AVG but Kaspersky is better for sure! Just dont want to pay for it.

Check the history for the Amazon 3 user offer - was about £11 (+del or free if you order 2 or £5 worth of other stuff) & some say it can be used as a 3 year single user licence.

Exactly the same as the paid-for version, except for the AOL branding.

this is free on the cover disc of the latest issue of PC Advisor ]http//ww…sc/

You will also want to look at AV-Comparatives.

av-comparatives.org/

and click on Comparatives.

Basically any one of Kaspersky, Eset NOD32, Avira are fine (Advanced+). Stay away from Norton and McAfee. AVG, while free, doesn't cut it.

NOD32 didnt get a great virus detection rating in tests - much to my surprise, it had always been my favourite prior.

Are you sure, according to adverts in ComputerActive free upgrade to V7 when out August first, I also spotted the free 6 month trial on the front of one of the computer magazines, as far as I am aware they will upgrade all versions to 7, could be wrong though.

Oh ok, you may not have to pay for the upgrade. Last time i looked you did...

Its only free for 3 months! (and you have to buy to mag)

I have used AVG for years but have switched to the free home version of avast, it is much better and found a trojan which avg missed.

Avast is here, I strongly suggest those with AVG switch.

Free Ugrade!

All customers who purchase our 6.0 products will be able to upgrade to version 7.0 for free!

look here www.Kaspersky.co.uk/version7

It's also an OEM version - not a problem for most but worth pointing out as it will not be in a retail box, just a disc.

Steve

I use AVG and have never had a problem. Having said that, I don't open spam email attachments, my router acts as a decent firewall and I solely use Firefox for browsing.

I refuse to pay for virus protection when there are decent products out there that do the same job for free!

If you have more than one PC and want to get the whole 'internet security' rather than just anti-virus, the Amazon deal is good:

Kaspersky Internet Security 6 (3 User Licence)

amazon.co.uk/Kas…8-1

And you get a free upgrade if you buy before v7 comes out.

Edit: actually, it looks like Dabs is now cheapest for this (the Amazon price went up), at £22.81:

I don't think it's the same. Or at least last time I checked it was Kaspersky v5, not 6.

Version 7 is due out soon (or is it out already?), hence the price drop with 6.

I understand your position, but bear in mind that AVG does technically NOT do the same job - the virus detection rate of AVG is 83% compared to Kasperskys 98%. If you must use a free one, I would advise Avira, which has a detection rate of 92%. For an industry leader in AV however, this price is cheap as chips. Essential for office PCs in particular.

Great deal, but imo AVG works fine with a competant user at the helm - for an office or a familiy PC this is a good deal though

Version 7 is out 1st Aug so make sure if you are buying v6.0, you can upgrade for free.

Correct

This is an OEM copy, this thread on ]Kaspersky support forums seems to indicate you will struggle to get a free upgrade to version 7.0?

Alternatively you can use the voucher ]here until tomorrow, to order a full copy for ~£12

Also I think this has expired webpage says "... This product is out of stock at SuperSpecial price ..."

Good deal, but I have always used f-protect! It is quite cheap and uses very little resource!

Now out of stock.

Thanks for letting us know, marked as expired.

Back in stock now - just ordered one - 12 left

Gone up to £10.55 delivered - I can live with that if it's as good as the comments in the thread!

I took out a 30day free trial with Kaspersky from their website - after a week so far so good- but would I be able to use the free cd on the front of this month's Pc Advisor so I can have an extra couple of months of free use? Or is it a case that you only get one free Kaspersky trial no matter the source?

£8.97+p&p at amazon ;-) ,

As your details have already been registered, I guess only one trail is permitted. Give it a try but don't forget, for the 6 month trail from PC Advisor, online registration is required by 19th Sept 2007. Good Luck!

Doesn't seem to be working, they're not sending out the activation code.

Shame, this was a brilliant offer. McAfee is almost as bad as Norton. :x
