Kaspersky Free Antivirus now available in Kaspersky UK

Found 9th Oct
Kaspersky Free is now available in the UK. Kaspersky's anti-virus products are rated high in many independent lab tests e.g. av-test.org/en/…16/

It provides standard anti-virus protection, which usually costs £15 a year for a 1-user for their "Kaspersky Anti Virus" product. It's IMO a cleaner alternative to the likes of AVG, Avira and Avast.

I personally uninstall their bundled VPN software "Kaspersky Secure Connection", which offers 200MB/day access to their VPN - may be useful when you're out and about using public hotspots, but not for me.

Rather than asking you to pay for the privilege of having your computer compromised, they're now offering to do it for free. How kind!

only for windows pc, but still hot!

Thanks for sharing @Darude . I've got Kaspersky Internet Security on a few of the families laptops/PC's and find it good - doesn't seem to hog the system the way some previous anti virus software has and is normally quick to update / respond to issues. Not sure how the free version compares but if it uses same detection engine etc then it would be my first choice

Oooh! This being free is new! I signed up to barclays bank to get kaspersky for free a few years back. Been using kaspersky since mid 2000's always thought it was the best of the picks overall. Well time to close the barclays account it would seem!

So you really wanna risk this russian product that can see what you are doing?

Not voted either way as the comment is on the product and not the price.

HOTT as long as you're okay with sending all your files to be scanned on Russian servers and then read by their intelligence service. Putin has taps on Kaspersky's servers.

... and the same applies to every country everywhere. Assume that files sent to "the cloud" are on servers in various different countries, and each respective intelligence service will hapily slurp them up for future use.

As far as the VPN goes, bear in mind the UK government now routinely monitors your browsing.

theguardian.com/wor…per

Why does this matter if you're not a terrorist? Because at some point they'll be hacked and your browsing habits will become accessible to all, banks, credit cards, social media sites, etc.

Massive hacks seem to be weekly now

Wouldnt touch with a barge pole!! Steer clear!

After the controversy surrounding this anti virus, I wouldn't touch it even if they paid me to.

IT guy here - I wouldn't trust this software as far as I could throw it. And yes, you could make the same arguments about data being taken off your PC with something like Microsoft's Security Essentials but the difference is Kaspersky will face no consequences if it turns out they've been data mining all your personal information. Microsoft would.

+1 on Kaspersky having close ties to the Russian government.

It's a shame, a really good anti-virus otherwise.

Yes I must agree, I much prefer Trump's intelligence services seeing everything I do online,

Hang on I was just thinking that, are you with THEM!

2 years ago I would have been all over this, Kapersky always had the reputation of being one of the best AV vendors. But now.... I hate to sound like a conspiracy nutjob but I just don't trust them anymore.

Yeah - British jobs for British people :-)

Just use it and your PC will be slow. "Kaspersky on its installation was just perfect on system, but after complete updates, Slower computer performance, almost 46% of CPU usage (which I noticed when computer was running slow) & slower I/O operations, slower copy operation." Full information quora.com/Whi…D32

Windows Defender should be enogh protection for anyone.

If you have Win 10 the Yanks are spying in you so what's the difference?
I used to have Kaspersky free with Barclays but the problem was that it would run the cpu to 100% for the first 20 mins at start up and then run constantly in the background. I spent days on online forums doing tweaks that they mentioned as it seemed then (3 years ago) that it was a very common problem.Maybe things have changed but if you have it installed have a look on task manager now and then and see if it's giving you high cpu usage.

Detection rates are much, much lower and doesn't intercept or block alot of malicious webpages which Kaspersky does.

It's paranoid, political nonsense from the Yanks.

Yes it should... but there in lies the problem. If Windows Defender is the benchmark and everything else is above it...

I use to use this but jumped ship a few years ago when they started to bloat their suite and it started to become slow (not painfully slow like McAfee) went to Noton360 seems a good time to see if they have gone back to basics.

I'm sure there will be some bigotted comments on here given the Russian connection, shameful given that they actually seem to be doing a lot more good if you put aside patriotism

You seem to have downloaded it already

My only point was that in this digital world, we all should be aware, what we have been signing up. Because something is CHEAP or FREE doesn't always mean it's good. See what and who are we supporting to as well.

Apply your senses and make wise decisions based on information. Look at the bigger picture and don't just jump on deals...

May be you are right but do you really want to caught in between. ...

Been using it for years myself, have the Total secruity version, watched the cpu usage a bit, goes from 0% to 0.5% mostly (briefly 1.5%). Never had any issues with it.

It's still a good antivirus, using their protection service for a while now.. never had any issues, voted hot

If you have a Barclays Bank Account its free anyway the full version dnt know if its a cut down vers like AVG free
