Cold... Let me start...AVG is my nomination...
Edited by: "ashok" 9th May 2011

Cold because it's free from Barclays, you don't need to maintain any specific balance or anything.

I'd recommend it over other AV apps though - detection rates are usually some of the best from what I've seen.

Hot for the price. I get KIS free with my bank and KIS is a much better package than AVG

You can reserve this in local shops *Currys / Pc World* for this price...Or can get it delivered for the same price...

Well it's hot for the price at those places too aswell. For 3 users an 1 year membership, it's worth the price. But as OSA says, and like me, I get it free with Barclays so obviously if other people are in the same situation, they can get it cheaper, well, free.

Same as Amazon, its normally around this price.

Kaspersky is far better than any other AV and there is always a good deal on it somewhere.

I agree, we have this on 3 laptops and no problems at all in 2 yrs we've used it. far easier and more reliable than others inc AVG

Norton is the biggest pile of bloatware ever. It's like a virus in itself trying to get rid of it. It's renowned for slowing pcs down. Kaspersky is better at detection and less of a resource hog.

i bought kaspersky a few weeks ago put it on my laptop no problem and then today i went to put it on my daughters and it wouldnt allow me to put either a 0 or an o in the reg key info so am stuck now.
has anyone else come up against this.

I could be wrong here, but i'm sure they don't use"O" or "0" in their activation keys.
Have you tried "D" or "Q"

Been using Kaspersky for the past year (got free license for a year) and it's great. Won't be renewing it though as I find Microsoft Security Essentials to be adequate.

AVG just sucks. If you use it, try something else and watch your PC speed up dramatically!

P.S. This deal is cold. Buy Kaspersky 2010 (or 2009) for £5 off eBay. Download a Kaspersky 2011 trial from the official website and use the key from the eBay copy to unlock the trial. Old keys work and are 100% valid with new versions of the software.

P.P.S. The eBay fiver copies of Kaspersky 2009/10 come with a 3 user license too. No point in paying full whack when this simple workaround is so much cheaper. As far as I see it, you're paying for the update definitions, so Kaspersky Labs have no qualms in supplying you with the latest version, when all you're paying them for is the updates. Otherwise why would they allow old keys to work on new installations?

Nice - I see AVG came 16th out of 18 letting 9% of viruses through! oO

Bewilders me that some idiots still recommend / use it

Having used in the last two years first Norton IS, and then Kaspersky IS (with free key from barclays), on my 2 computers (one w7 laptop, one xp netbook), my experience is that both are good options but Kaspersky uses noticeably more system resources especially when "updating", whereas Norton placed no noticeable strain on the system at all. KIS also has come up with a few false positives, which Norton did not.

Professional testing confirms that these days Norton uses fewer system resources than most, certainly fewer than KIS or MSE. Both offer significantly better protection that the free alternatives, though something free like MSE should be fine coupled with common sense. In other words if you have others (eg children) using your computer I would shell out for something like Norton.

It's also important to keep all your software up to date. I advise scanning with the free Secunia PSI.

Given the availability of free 3-machine licences for KIS from Barclays and often cheaper offers elsewhere this deal doesn't seem very good.

Having left Barclays in protest, when my current licence runs out I will be either looking for a cheap deal from Norton (don't intend to spend more than £20 for a 3-machine IS licence) or switching to MSE.

That's not my experience.
Also you can read the report on Kaspersky here:
av-test.org/rep…pdf
It says

Average slow-down of the computer by the security software in daily use: … Average slow-down of the computer by the security software in daily use: 195 seconds

whereas for Norton:
av-test.org/rep…pdf

Average slow-down of the computer by the security software in daily use: … Average slow-down of the computer by the security software in daily use: 122 seconds

That's tests on Windows 7 from the first quarter of 2011.

The reports also claim a slightly better level of protection from Norton Internet Security than for Kaspersky Internet Security.

yeah yeah norton is a virus, bloated, slows yer PC. shut the hell up, its been completely overhauled since 2009 and still some people cant get their head around it.
find a pro review (independent or magazine) that says Norton slows down your PC...you wont.

I think the stereotype that Norton sucks is based purely on what it used to be. I remember when it was considered the market leader and definitely was bloatware and horrible to use. Think it was the 2004 version I tried.

People who had similar experiences probably still hold the opinion that its bloatware, even if they have changed it. Just bad past experiences taint people's views today.

MS SECURITY ESSENTIALS FTW

yes but its the inabillity in those people to accept change coupled with the people will not even think about buying whats now a market leader in paid for security, on the advice of someone who's knowledge is completely out of date.

so many times I've heard "my mate says norton slows down your computer"
you mate was right....in 2008
its the same on here.

Alright fair enough guys, if Norton isn't as bad as it used to be then fair enough, but the last time I used it, it was an absolute mess. However, I'll stay with Kaspersky as I get it free.

see, thats a good argument, you can get a top rated security, a full paid for version for free from your bank.
I got Kaspersky off the rep at work.
tried it for nearly 4 months and then it stopped auto updating and even after a format & reinstall (built a new PC) and re-activating the subscription, it refused to autoupdate.
am now using Trend Micro Titanium. free copy from the rep on the grounds that out of all of the Currys stores he'd been in, I'm the only one that knew anything about their program, cos I had previously used it for a year or so when it was still called PC Cillin and had been very highly rated.

Avast is brilliant and its free, if you pay then your stupid.

avast also charge for their products too, thats why it nags you to pay for the full suite.
thats kinda how a business makes money and pays its employees, they'd go under real quick if they didnt charge for their products.

the free one is a limited basic security, it scores well alongside other freeware sample products but its free for a reason, its a marketing tool to draw attention to the company.

they want you to like it and PAY FOR IT.
its business, they don't do it cos they're nice.

Agree. Norton was awfull years ago and now has a "which" recommend. KAS update is rubbish and pulse update works better, any free AV or IS is rubbish sorry Norton 2011 link
