KEF Q500 Speakers (Pair) in Black - £349 @ Superfi

68
Found 13th Jan
RRP 699£, has been sold for £399 earlier, now only £349 for an amazing pair of floor standers.

Just bought myself a pair today from Superfi.co.uk
Also available for same price from PeterTyson.co.uk

With the Q series, KEF have developed a range of high quality, high value speakers. The KEF Q500s are two and a half way floorstanding speakers with incredible performance. They are fitted with KEF's point source Uni-Q drivers for medium and high frequencies and a long throw bass driver for low frequencies- enhanced by a pair of auxiliary bass radiators.

The Uni-Q mid/high frequency speaker has a 130mm bass/mid-range driver and a 25mm aluminium dome tweeter with 'tangerine' waveguide. The low frequency long throw bass driver and auxiliary bass radiators are also 130mm diameter.

Other clever features include the link switch for choosing between mono and bi-amping. Turn it clockwise and the two terminals are linked so you can drive the speaker from one amp: anti-clockwise and the terminals are split so you can connect the high frequency and low frequency separately.

They look pretty smart, are you pleased with them?
I suspect the bone of contention here is that Richer have them for the same price with the 6 year guarantee.

Have not opened them at home yet, because I am waiting for delivery of my new Amp hopefully Monday.
But I did try them at superfi, London today.....absolutely fell in love with them and for the price in my opinion completely throw away.
Unfortunately RicherSounds do not have them in stock for delivery anymore. I checked with them first ....only three shops have some stock left which were quite far from me.

Jealous. Great find, heated

Been this price for a couple of months. Not expecting it to stay discounted for much longer. peter Tyson have the black ones for 349 too. I've had my eye on them for a while, but not sure whether to go for these or the Dali Zensor 5s in RS. Any audiophiles advice would be appreciated, only ever owned a Sony 5.1 5.1 kit before so no clue about floorstanders.

Dont see any wings on them?

What amp are you pairing them with? Just out of interest.

I've been thinking of these for a couple of weeks now... Well reviewed

Great question. I had my eyes on the Marantz PM6006. But unfortunately did not have much space for an amp that size. Today tried the Denon PMA50 at Superfi paired with these bad boys. Absolutely fell in love. The denon has a very compact size and can be nicely tucked away as I would like it to be. But they did not have one in stock so have ordered one. Hopefully arriving Monday.

Grab them mate. Before they run out. Richer Sounds clearly suggested manufacturing has been stopped and they are getting rid of stock.

Very nice!

In my opinion if you intend on using them at some point for a 5.1. Then I would go for the Kef Q series as the uni q tech means the sound travels a wider angle and there for less dead spots in the room. Plus they have won shed loads of awards with use as a 5.1 too

I wouldn't have gone for that amp with those speakers TBH, it simply doesn't have enough power to drive them at higher volumes to their ability - 30w.

I can vouch whole heartedly for the Rega Brio-R if you need a compact form factor, very well reviewed and drives my PMC DB1+ with gusto (bookshelves). The Rega will get you 50w each, much better IMO.

Eventually 5.1 yes. but I'm getting new car in july, so will be just using these as stereo until after i have bought that then saved more for the other 3.1 lol

Does anyone know Are these suitable for a 12x14 ft room paired with nad 326 bee amp ??? I have tannoy mercury m2 at moment

Thank you so much for sharing that. Will definitely look into this.
Very kind of you to share links. Much appreciated.

You definitely need a powerful amp to get the most out of them.
Very good general purpose set. But you also need a large room to disperse that amount of bass:)

I think I'll stick with my B&W P6 floorstanders. Twenty years on they still sound brilliant!!

Honestly in a room of that size I don't think they're the best choice of speaker. Better off with the Q300 or Tannoy Revolution bookshelves though the amp has more than enough power to drive them.

Question is, would you want to drive them that hard in a smaller sized room? Not sure I would.

That's the beauty of getting decent kit, barring marketing if something sounded good a decade ago there's no reason in the world of stereo it can't do so today.

I won't be changing my PMC unless they die, god forbid.

My Acoustic Energy Neo 3's with neo 1's at the rear are awesome. I also got them when the line ended for £175

Bought these in white about 8 months ago from superfi for 399. They are great paired to my old Audiolab 8000 amplifier. I replaced a pair of kef q55 floorstanders which I owned for about 18 years. The highs sound slightly clearer and the sound stage a little more open on these. I wasn't convinced initially, either I got used to them or they eventually settled in. I might replace the amp to set up a 4.0 system, any recommendations? Thinking kef eggs for the rear.

The wife said I could get discrete speakers for the living room. These fit the bill right?

Nice speakers. Just be weary that if you're planning to listen to the likes of Drake, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Little Mix, etc on these, you'll most probably be disappointed with the results. You'll be better off getting something like the Tannoy Eclipse 3 and a subwoofer for the same money.

Also if you're planning to build a surround system around these, the other models in this range are not as discounted so the total price will quickly mount up.

Great link. Noticed how a number pop albums in Vinyl have a higher DR than the CD version! E.g. Lady Gaga The Fame has a DR score of just 5 on CD but 11 on Vinyl..... Proves the same music is mastered differently depending on the audience - blame the studio engineer (and his employer) for this.

That Dynamic Range Database is complete BS. I trained and worked as a Sound Engineer in the early to mid 90's. Anyway enough about me, check this reddit sub >

There definitely are badly mastered albums, however that database won't help you determine which are.

I have these as my fronts in a 5.1 setup excellent sound and no dead spots at all. Have a REL Quake sub also and together they are capable of rattling the Windows!

Would these enhance my present system much? I have 5.1 Wharefdale DX1 speaker set driven by AV Yamaha VX-677.
Thinking I could replace the fronts with these and use the DX-1 fronts in zone 2 for stereo.
Any advice appreciated.

I disagree - it's a good guide. Vinyl rips whose DR values differ from the CD by only a few points are most probably the same mastering, as the A/D conversion process smooths out the hard-clipped peaks. However, for example, if the DR value of the CD is 5 (which will sound atrocious), and the vinyl is 10 or 11 -- then they are different masterings.

I find low DR recordings are particularly harsh on the ears for percussion instruments like cymbals -- it makes them sound mushy and unnatural.

Your centre speaker should match your fronts, otherwise the tone of voices will be different - so for example you could notice the voice tonality changing when the sound travelling from centre speaker to left/right speaker like when a character is walking around in a movie.

If you're set on buying the Kefs, I would say keep your DX-1s in 5.1 for movies and use the Kefs as zone 2 for stereo.

One of my Tannoy Mercury F4 custom's has some slight cabinet damage and have been thinking about replacing them...
How would these compare?
