so i assume these are better than the kmix that were much cheaper last year?
they seemed to be 500W vs the 1000W on this
but surely they haven't double the power? or is it a different way of measuring it?

That's actually really confusing as if you look on Amazon some say 500W in the title but in specs it says 1000W. Mines a kmx50 series and I've just checked it says 500W and it manages everything I've tried so far.

It looks like this is also known as the kMix KMX754CR. You can see the specs on the Kenwood website and it does look like it is 1000W rather than 500W for the older kMix.
