It says from age 5 upwards so not sure if it might be a bit small.

Probably not - 16 inch is kind of that awkward middle ground, where a 14 inch is too small for a taller 4-5 year old, you get a 16 inch straight up, rather than move from 14 inch to 16 inch. 20 inch would be better for 8 yo.
Based on mine:
14 inch - 3-6 year old
16 inch - 4-7 year old
20 inch - 6-10 year old

I looked at this but ended up going for the 20inch version. My son is average height and is 8, and this size is generally ok for him. 18" would have been ok. 16" ended up being big for my 4 year old so I would guess an average 5/6 year old might get by with 16".
