Did anyone get one of these laptops. Mine has arrived ... looks great but the DVD drive is a

TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L532B

and it does not recognise normal DVDs .... data DVDs are fine but it will not recognise normal DVDs ... more that a little annoying. Dell have no info on this drive at all ... not even drivers ... thanks Dell.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Si

Check for bios updates on it, there was a problem where some dvdrw drives wouldnt read everything before and there was an update available. Or give support a call, have a chat with an Indian

Or firmware updates might be available here: tsstorage.com/kor…fo/ at some point. Looking around this seems a common thing, as MikeT says.

I bought one of these too.
I've just tried some cds and dvds in it - not actually used the drive yet!

anyways, it seems fine with all the media I threw at it. I tried a pressed original dvd movie and it wouldn't play initially in powerdvd due to the region not being set yet on the drive. You can set it within powerdvd or in device manager. By default the region is set to unassigned.

there are plenty of 3rd party utilities to make it region free or region selectable if you've used up the standard 5 region changes.

I've also flashed the bios to A09 as mine shipped with A08.

Yes got one when I posted the deal.

I tried it with DVDs and they played superbly. Mine is a NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A. (run winmsd for quick info.)

Recorded to CD-R (The Windows XP restore disk) and that worked OK. Didn't try DVD-R/RW

It was sluggish with the Dell Delivery installation s/w so deleted partitions and reinstalled XP from scratch !

BIG Mistake - all the s/w was installed on the smaller partition. Never mind ;-(

It is massively faster now though with one larger partiton. Dell didn't send any disks at all (except Media Experience which installs BUT doesn't work).

They do have a lot of s/w on their website but none of the DVD Power DVD/Symantec Quick Restore etc. etc.

A cracking notebook deal none the less. Watched one movie (before I wiped the disk) and it was really clear and the sound was excellent. Also have used the DVB USB Freeview USB adaptor to watch TV which is also excellent!

(Dell Support have quite a few emails now).

All sorted now ... it was the region not being set that caused the issue!

Thanks guys
Si
