Spanning the first 13 years of Killing Joke's recording history, LAUGH? documents the evolution of an enigmatic band that has always challenged its own musical identity. Opening with "Turn to Red", an early effort at dub, the album highlights the numerous changes that Killing Joke subjected itself to over the years. Also present is "Eighties", a catchy New Wave rocker that won the band a temporary mainstream spotlight with its inclusion in the DOCTOR DETROIT soundtrack.
The later cuts find Killing Joke experimenting more with tape loops and synthesizers than before, and Jaz Coleman's voice is less gravelly than in its 1980s incarnation, yet the band retains a certain hard edge. LAUGH? provides an excellent sampling of one of the '80s' most uncompromising bands.

Been listening to a lot of Killing Joke recently. Superb band, "Love Like Blood" and "Adorations" are great tracks.

Good compilation, shame it never included anything from the Fire Dances 1983 album on it (and thankfully nothing from Outside The Gate 1988), other than that its a good collection chronicalling their unique early dub/post punk sound of "Turn To Red"(As featured in GTA IV), through to the more commerical element of their mid 80s output with "Eighties" the tune notoriously bastar*ised by Nirvana as "Come As You Are" and Killing Jokes most known song "Love Like Blood", now sadly dedicated at concerts to the tragic loss of second bassist Paul Raven. Finishing off the compilation with "Age Of Greed" from a revitalised brutal sounding Killing Joke showing off the drumming skills of Martin Atkins (PIL, Pigface, Ministry).

This compilation importantly brought back Killing Joke from near extinction, the track selection, and old band photos were what spawned Jaz Coleman to get talking with Youth about reforming Killing Joke and this then ensured their most successfully commercial period to follow in 1994's "Pandemonium" album.

Interesting the front cover to this compilation features a picture from a concert flyer of 1980. A Glasgow gig scheduled for around this time was abruptly cancelled after the band put up concert posters featuring an image of a Catholic priest -- widely believed to be Pope Pius XI but actually German abbot Albanus Schachleiter, photographed at the annual Nazi Party Convention in Nuremberg in September 1934 -- appearing to return the salute of Nazi brownshirts. It is an acutal photograph, but clearly the band's penchant for black humour was not shared in some circles.

Great compilation from a brilliant band.

Been listening to this CD in the car recently and it takes me right back to the 80's, when I went to see them a couple of times in Edinburgh.

If you are thinking of ordering it, bear in mind that some of the earlier stuff is not as accessable and melodic as the later, better-known, stuff, like Love Like Blood.

But still well worth £3.99.

You mean "mid period" stuff!

Killing Joke are not just an 80s band, are still alive, have recently reformed the original line up of Jaz Coleman, Geordie Walker, Martin Glover (Youth), Paul Ferguson.

Who is more of the clown, looking at your HUKD posts you tend to only post negative or derogotory comments...have you tried actually posting deals or contributing any sort of help on these forums?

Wait a minute, clowns are meant to be comical performers..guess fool is more the appropriate term huh.

"Follow The Leaders".. WOW What a song!! So many memories linked to that. Good deal.

Excellent find Wedge.

Hot deal, top band.
