I saw those in Dunelm store for 2 quid a week ago. You can basically use mayo jar for this purpose.

An empty mayo jar (or two if you're feeling generous) as a gift to someone is acceptable in these times of financial hardship.

I make a lot of sourdough and use these. Everyone saying you don't need this is of course correct, but, these do a good job and this a good price. The jars have straight sides to the top which is easier to work with than say a reused mayo jar that usually curls at the top, and the lid makes it easy to leave it slightly open to allow gas to escape. The scraper is decent. The measuring cup lid I don't use, I always weigh the water and flour. Elastic bands are handy but you'll soon be good at judging it by eye or using the measures on the jar. Only issue is it's a little smaller than I'd like. I make up about 220g of starter, use about 190g leaving 30g for the starter but that does make two large 900g loaves. If your starter is particularly active it might overflow a little at that level (but that's not a big deal). I tend to cycle the jars - starter lives in fridge until I need it, make up new batch in second jar and clean the original.

I'm going to give sourdough baking a go. Looked at this Saturday morning on amazon and it was £13.99 so I thought I'd buy some bigger kilner jars but held off due to price. A couple of hours later I noticed the big price drop so bought. Thought it was too niche for this site so didn't post. Well done OP

Best tip i can give on starting sourdough baking is buy a mature starter to begin with. I got one on amazon and 2 years later it's still going strong

Exactly what I was thinking - I'm building up my starter in an old gherkin jar from Lidl.

I've been using an old jar from mayo or something else (the label came off long ago) for such a long time. You really don't need to spend for this.

Does anyone use a bread maker to bake their sourdough? If so, how?

Mine has a setting for the starter which I've used (it just makes it a little warm so it bubbles up more quickly) and also settings for sourdough dough prep and baking which I haven't. The issue for me is that they have quick warm rises which should work, but it wants regular yeast added (which is kinda missing the point) and you're not getting the full flavour benefit of a slow risen dough. I'm sure if you do what if says you'll get something tasty though.
