Kindle Fire HDX 8.9, 32GB with 4g & Wifi £149.00 @ Amazon (deal of the day)

Found 20th Jul 2015
Similar to the deal that was posted here 3 weeks ago for the 16GB version for £139.65. This deal is for the 32GB version with 4g and wifi. Seems to get pretty decent reviews for the screen especially. I'm tempted but I've never had a "Fire" version of Android....anyone got any experience?

Some spec:
Screen is 2560x1600 giving 339ppi
2.2 Ghz quad core Snapdragon 800
Adreno 330
2GB RAM
LTE Band 3, 7 and 20 (1800, 2600 and 800)....is this compatible with all UK networks????
8MP camera

Any HUKD'ers that own/have used this device I'd like to hear what your thoughts are?

Seems to be the cheapest it's been

I got the £140 deal, it's ok but I'm not very keen on the UI, and obviousely limited to the Amazon app store unless you want to go through the process off rooting it. Been thinking about sending it back for a while. The resolution of the screen is obviously good, but it's covered in a grid-like pattern of small lines for some reason. It's mostly noticeable when the screen is white. I've heard it's to do with the touch screen. But I've never seen it on any other device.

Thanks for the info, I've noticed that grid pattern on my Nexus 4 but only when the screen is off.

I wonder have you used it for reading magazines? I have a Kindle Paperwhite that I use for books but have been thinking of a tablet for magazines and books with lots of images. I borrowed a Nexus 7 but the screen was too small for reading text when viewing one whole page so was hoping this 9 inch screen may be more suitable??

I haven't tried that myself but I would say it would be very a good use for it seeing as the resolution is so good. Give it a go, you could always return if not happy

Is this much better than a nexus 7 !

Excellent deal and this is an excellent product.

I did notice that the 7 inch model is now out of stock though which is interesting.

Great tablet hardware wise pretty much the same as the Note 3 but that UI killed me i had to sell my 7" version on and as far as i understand rooting it isn't possible on these latest firmware.

i bought the deal last time around for 8.9 and am very happy with the tablet - it just doesnt show any lag or discomfort that other android tablets show, its so thin that it might be thinner than ipad but still looks very sturdy.
i have been using it for skype calls as well and i must say the front camera is good as my G3. the max volume could have been better.
i use the silk browser as well for google search and everything else and it all feels great peice of kit for money.

Seems this is a version clearance as version4 is now out. Better hardware at triple the price :-). Only experience I have with kindle devices left me feeling annoyed and frustrated as I am used to regular android devices and this is quite severely locked down.

Google Play no root required. But a little time and effort.

Hello together,
After a bunch of testing I find out how Google Play Games Connections working under FireOS 4.5.4. This is essential for Backup Games like Clash of Clans (installed per sideload) to your Google Account for using on another Device.

I do the following:
Download the gapps-kk-20150412-minimal-edition-signed.zip from here:
forum.xda-developers.com/sho…..8

Install the following apk from folder gapps-kk-20150412-minimal-edition-signed\system\priv-app per sideload:
Google Account Manager 4.4.4-1227136
Google Backup Transport 4.4.4-1227136
Google OneTime Init 4.4.4-1227136
Google Partner Setup 4.4.4-1227136
Google Services Framework 4.4.4.-1227136

After that i get the following files from here:

google-play-services.en.uptodown.com/
google-play-5-6-8-multi-android.apk
google-play-services-7-5-74-1997312-070-multi-android

And the newest Google Play Games (3.1.1) from Playstore
play.google.com/sto…=de
Downloaded the apk via
apps.evozi.com/apk…er/

That combination of files working actually on my 3rd Generation HDX 7 with OS 4.5.4 and allows me to backup my Gameplay to Google Play Games Account.

Hope you enjoy!

is the 4g locked to Vodafone only?

I don't think so, but they give you a Vodafone SIM card. I might be wrong though.

I was just about to buy that model for £99.99 and all of a sudden it was oos. very suspicious

Can you change the sim in these

For Amazon Kindle ecosystem fans, this 2013 version is a good saving over the current version which was only an incremental hardware upgrade really. Nice screen and no performance slouch either.

Anyone got one of these is it worth the money now.

I bought one a couple of months ago off eBay. Brand new, £200 for the 16Gb version. Screen is amazing, light weight and no problems speed wise, being tied to Amazon for content is a pain but fixable. Lack of expandable memory is a real problem but not being able to plug in external USB storage via the micro USB port is unforgivable.

Latest firmware version isn't hackable but you can downgrade the firmware and then hack that and install Google services. Wish I'd waited a few months and got this model - really need the extra internal storage.

Are the special offers a nuisance , pain ?

Still a bit pricey for such a limited Eco system.
Be better off with a 2nd hand 1st gen iPad mini for same price or galaxy tab 3/4 can be picked up for sub £100

The cloud can never be a proper substitute for real on-board storage so the absence of a microSD slot will still be a deal killer for many even with 25gb (of the 32gb) available for storage.

what is this "Includes Special Offers"

Great price, heat added.

Just be aware you cannot use custom roms on this tablet so you are stuck with Amazon's crappy buy our stuff UI

Thanks for the heads up, I've been waiting for this for quite some time!
Unfortunately, it didn't work for me, could you/others please confirm it's working on the 8.9" ver?

To get rid of special offers just chat to amazon say your not happy with and they will remove offers tried and tested.

Thank you. Is it as easy to sideload to this as it is for the AFTV and Stick?

is this available via Amazon Now so you can avail the £20 off first order?

Good price for the hardware but not keen on UI.

Can you explain?

you get £20 off first order placed via amazon now. My question was, is this item available on amazon now. I have not installed the Amazon now app so have not checked it yet. wondering if anyone else has.

Ok thanks never knew about that offer but since its discounted already i dont think it would work but not confirmed.

Excellent price. I have the 7" model and use it daily with Prime so this is a very good price for the next model up.

Excellent,
2 ordered and heated.
Thanks.

Got the 7" version already, but this one is much better value with 4G. It seems to include £5 app store credit and some kind of Vodafone data bundle, so not a bad price at all. Thanks OP, have picked one up.

£139.65 for the 16GB 4G 8.9" HDX a few weeks ago was an excellent deal but £9.65 extra for the 32GB 4G 8.9" HDX is gobsmackingly excellent oO
I already had a 32GB 7" HDX but purchased the 16GB deal as I wanted the larger screen and have not been disappointed.
The lack of on-board storage space is nota big issue - just get a small NAS server to store all your music, photos, videos etc - I use a little HooToo Tripmate (£15+ on Amazon) which is small enough to carry in a shirt pocket - this and 4G mobile data make the HDX a real go-anywhere powerhouse.
I haven't rooted to or installed Google Play but it's a breeze to sideload apps - I've installed the Chrome browser and a Panasonic remote imaging wifi app amongst others and all run perfectly - so contrary to what a previous poster stated you ARE NOT limited to the Amazon app store without rooting.
Someone mentioned seeing grid lines on the screen - well I can't see any, not even with a 20x magnifying glass and I'm sure there would be a furore in the forums if such a thing were prevalent.
The 4G connection IS NOT LOCKED to Vodafone and YOU CAN swap out the sim card - I use an EE data only PAYG sim in mine - I tossed the Voda sim as soon as I got it. I have also noticed it'll grab and hold on to weak 4G signals better than many 4G equipped phones (btw - free PAYG EE data only with a complimentary 200MB data available at PCWorld).
I have to echo a previous poster's comment re the front facing 8MP camera - it's excellent and the rear camera ain't half bad either.
Some have asked about 'Special Offers' - basically an advert is displayed on the lock screen rather than screen saver. I have to wonder about people who complain about it - do they spend all their time waiting for the screen to sleep so they can wake it to stare at a screen saver? Most of the time I never notice the ad - I wake the screen and swipe the lock screen out of the way in a fraction of a second. BUT sometimes I do notice adverts and sometimes I have been offered genuine bargains - for the life of me I can't understand why any HDUK member would decry such a thing, we're all after bargains aren't we? It's also £10 cheaper than getting the HDX without 'special offers' (aka adverts) - and you can always get them removed later - usually for free.
I stated earlier on that lack of on-board storage was not a big issue to me but I do get a bit peeved when I grab a bargain and a short time later a better bargain comes along - well the 32GB HDX is definitely a better bargain than the 16GB HDX so I'm peeved!! To put this right I have now purchased the 32GB deal today and will be sending my 16GB HDX back to Amazon under their very generous 30 days returns policy for Kindles

Recently bought one of these tablets, regretting the decision slightly due to the poor interface. Not sure if selling my soul to Amazon was the best idea for a tablet.

Good price and will be perfect for many people!
