Saw that they had this instore. I was not looking to get one as I am happy with my current model. It seems like a good price to me. If it helps the stock number is 83400110. Remember you have to buy this instore or over the telephone and not online

Is this the "press a button to turn the page" jobby rather than the swype right to left to turn a page?. Not had much experience with kindles but tried the kindle app on a regular tablet and that performed well.

Great Deal

No buttons other than the one that takes you to the home screen. You'd need to swipe the screen to change the page.

Brilliant price, absolute bargain, ive got one of these and its a lot better than a normal kindle, Hot!!

I got a kindle paperwhite last year for Xmas and you can either swipe right to left on screen or tap the right side of the screen to go forward a page. only physical button on mine is the on/off. everything else is done onscreen.

that 'go to deal' link doesn't work.

you can't buy it online unless from amazon. you have to go instore or give them a call.

I've just called John Lewis to order this and they don't have any idea about this deal. The 1st gen Paperwhite is not showing up on their system, just the new one. They also told me that the stock number is invalid as all their stock numbers have 8 digits. Has anybody managed to successfully order one over the phone?

Well, I tried again with that number and they couldn't find that either. I was told that I would have to call up the stores tomorrow to find out if they have one.

Were you calling the store? If you were trying John Lewis online they won't be able to sell it to you. It just that when I got my last Kindle I had this issue.

I called the main number for John Lewis orders. All the stores would be closed as far as I'm aware. I guess I'll just have to try the shops tomorrow.

Will ring them tomorrow, worth a punt at this price

Was all made up today getting a Asus Vivo 10.1 for £50 from Tesco only to realise I left my beloved Paperwhite in my hotel when I checked out!

I think you'd be better off spending £5 less on a Nook Glowlight. I got one from JL last week. Excellent ereader and has a light for reading in the dark.

How easy are these to get used to as opposed to actual books? (I have kindle on my pc but reading a book on a computer screen isn't the same somehow. Maybe it's because it's a desktop...).

Kindles are easy to get used to, in my experience. You quickly realise that "I like the smell/feel of a proper book" is an argument that holds no weight against the sheer convenience of an eReader. It's different, of course, but I can carry hundreds or thousands of books with me wherever I go. I can read in the dark and it doesn't strain my eyes. I can carry it around and it's thinner and lighter than even one single book. It really is a no brainer.

The Which? Best Buy ereaders are the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kobo Glo

A mighty fine humblebrag right there, old chap

I have also checked with our local store they are saying that the stock number provided is invalid and not on their system and it is not online either ~ Great deal if you can get one!

Not the best advice I've ever seen on HUKD - the paperwhite has a far superior backlight to the simpletouch glow... Granted, the Nook may be more versatile as you can root and run it as an android tablet, but at this price it's down to individual preference. Give both a go and see which is best for you.

Heat added, cheers OP - good luck everyone!

I'd seen the deal on here and my store had 3 in stock! Also got my Kindle back! Whoop! Hotel found it!

Amazon wouldn't let them ship it out to you...

Can everyone who managed to find one at this price please state which store it was? Thanks

Has anybody actually bought one for this price? If so, where? John Lewis in Oxford Street do not have any for this price and if nobody else has actually managed to get one...

Looks like nobody has got one at this price, even the op.
Another non existent deal

I tried JL Chester and they had none either.

I just called John Lewis on 020 8532 3500 (supposed to be for Westfield Stratford) and spoke to "Alice". She confirmed the price IS £54.50. However, she said Stratford only showed that they had 1 in stock (which might not be updated) but Oxford St is showing 21 in stock atm. She also confirmed that this price is nationwide. I've put in a reservation in both stores, will have to wait and see if there are any left..

I used the OPs corrected product code for the query: 83400110

Having been there, I can confirm that Oxford Street aren't selling them at that price. More than that, they don't actually have any of the 1st gen in stock at all.

Well, that's what "Alice" has told me. I've noted down the reference numbers for the requests. Guess I'll just have to wait and see when/if I get the confirmation call :\

Well I was also told when I called that it was impossible to reserve them over the phone, so I'd be curious to know what response you get.

Contacted Solihull store who didn't have any in stock. However they said they knew of a store that were showing 30 in stock and if they could get one for me, I could get free delivery as over £50. Said someone would come back to me. Cheadle store phoned back, to say they had 1 in stock - was I going to collect it. No - I said I'd been promised free delivery - and Cheadle said they couldn't send me the one out, as it would be against their agreement with Amazon.
Doesn't stop John Lewis selling current ones on their website for full price with free delivery though does it !!

Just got a call back from Oxford St. Apparently, possibly due to a bug in their system, it's incorrectly showing that they have stock. He did say that they had been reduced to £54.50 and that I should keep an eye out on the website as many have been sent to the warehouse to be sold (no idea why). He also said that Cheadle might have some in stock and they could do delivery.

Called Cheadle store (08446931735) who said they have 26 in stock and they've taken my details down and someone will (apparently) pick one up on the shop floor and call me back for payment. Delivery is free as well I'm told as it's over £50. Fingers crossed..

Update: Stratford also called me back to say they have none in stock
