You can also pay monthly so £10 a month for 5 months with no interest, I know some people may not like that but it's what persuaded me to to update mine

That price is only for the one with ads.
It's only lock screen/screensaver ads.

Damn, just ordered two on Amazon for Christmas present
Just ordered
Better price than on Black Friday

Until you get their customer service people to remove them.
Thank you OP.Was about the order yesterday night, saved me £20! Happy Christmas!
I have owned one of these for over 2 years and I can confirm that it's only the lock screen that has ads and with that it's only recommendations for books.
How does the screen compare to the paperwhite? Apart from it being waterproof.

Small ad banner at the bottom of the library too. Never notice it though as i probably spend no more than 5 seconds on that screen a week when opening a new book.

I've been satisfied with it. I did see that the Paperwhite had a higher resolution, but it makes no difference for reading (may be relevant for graphic novels). To my knowledge you can't apply night mode on this Kindle (white text on black background), but you can on the Paperwhite (which is the one thing that annoys me).

Do they remove them for free?

Yeah. Just get onto them after a couple of days and tell them you bought it for a child and the adverts are inappropriate. They'll remove them as a "one off goodwill gesture".

You might get an uncooperative jobsworth on the chat but just disconnect and try again.

I don’t see that as an option ? I’d upgrade mine if I can tho
The last thing I remember being made with a frontlight was the Game Boy Advance SP. Still, beats looking for a lamp.

Paperwhite has twice the PPI, a flush display, and more LEDs so the lighting is more uniform. It's a much nicer reading experience.

drag and drop files is fine, but you want mobi not epub....
Contact customer support and tell them the ads annoy you and that you are going to return the kindle. They will remove the ads free of charge for you.

eInk cannot be backlit and it's also a lot easier on the eyes.

They have to be converted using Calibre or similar. It's an easy one-step process even if they have DRM (little extra setup needed).

Kindles work with .mobi files. Get hold of a program called Calibre and you can convert your .epub files.

In general that's true but Amazon do have some very good offers, it's just that they have a lot of deals on into the nbew year.

Mobi is an older and inferior format that supports less features so you can lose a lot of formatting and layout setup this way. You should use AZW3 (KF8) which converts a lot better without losing out on anything.

If that doesn't work, it will cost to remove them which is fair enough considering Amazon knock £10 off the price if you don't choose the "Without Special offers" option when you buy one of these.

Not necessarily. You can always follow these simple instructions and remove them yourself using a PC.
