Would I get good write speeds if using a USB 3 Memory card reader? I like the idea of a nice small swappable device, and not have a pile of sticks around.

Yes, if you use a quality reader. I get great speeds even with a cheap £3 reader, but my cards only have about half the speed of this, so can't say it will be full speed with cheaper readers.
