That's a good price. As I've been looking at this recently I've created a spreadsheet to compare the 3 main DIY sheds and here are my findings;

Notes
1. Despite all being made by Knauf they all are seemingly different types, earthwool, ekoroll and space loft roll. I've no idea of the differences and suspect this is something to keep the diy sheds happy and its really the same product. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
2. There are some variances in the length of the rolls, especially the 200mm from Homebase which is quite short so its best to show the cost as per metre squared, which Wickes does by default.
3. All 3 have offers at the moment and I'm not sure if they are continuous or almost always on offer although this Wickes one for £12 a roll is new and lower than in Dec. Also Homebase and B&Q you have to buy multiples whereas Wickes is per roll.

Mineral wool is around 25% more insulative than fibreglass (to start with) & has a large amount of recycled material making it a "greener" by terminology product, it is denser, doesn't "flop" so much as fibreglass, & has better fire resistance & soundproofing qualities.

Although fibreglass is now using more / equivilent recycled material it doesn't deal with compression as well & subsequently loses its air pocket retention & therefore the whole purpose of the insulation (some is still better than none though).

Earthwool = fibreglass with a HIGH recycled content (up to 80%) & no formaldehyde, instead uses non oil / petro chemical based binding agent to keep it together

Thanks for that. I've added the R value to the spreadsheet and it looks as if all 3 sheds are mostly selling the equivalent product. It still doesn't quite describe how the product compresses or what its composed of though as your explanation does.

Which are the best to handle if you come out in a rash moving it about?
Gloves and space suit thing, not a bad idea to wear a breather mask as well

the itchy nature of fibreglass is the micro abrasive qualities digging under the skin.

Earthwool is the least itchy of the nasty stuff!

A simple google (never mind the ability to create a spreadsheet) will reveal all about U, values, manufacturing, chemical processes etc.

phenolic foil faced insulation is far better. in terms of itch proof, breatability insitu, clean up micro dust with the environment etc.

If you are going to lay it thick wadding variant down then consider a membrane on top to limit the micro movement by airflow. (a roll of insulation paper).

If you need accessible space then its cheaper to use phenolic than it is to buy & fit lots of loft legs & lay reams of insulation, if you have shallow roofing then phenolic is better.

Phenolic = foam with a gas filling (air bubbles) ..seal cuts with proper foil tape. 70mm of phenolic foil faced foam insulation is around the equivilent of 125mm of fibreglass, it is already compressed, it is good for "light" weight bearing.

cut it using a dedicated insulation saw blade / wavy saw for far less mess.

Seconds boards can be purchased too!
A decent cheap "tyvek" suit is way more durable than a cheap paper suit for this sort of job.
A decent headtorch, coveralls, goggles & respirator are a must have.
Might sound like a strange question, but does anyone know (roughly) what the diameter of the roll is? We've got a really small loft hatch and I reckon it'll be a close call if I can squeeze a roll through it. I guess, worst case, I could unroll it beforehand and drag it through, but that sounds like it'll just make even more mess!

Most rolls will compress sufficiently to enable them to be dragged through a hatch (big enough for a human to get through!)

Definitely don't unroll it and pull through (whilst possible it'll be a horrific job as it'll expand massively as you unpack it and you'll have a flexible sheet effectively 1.2x6.0m!)

Wear a mask, the fibres are deadly in your lungs. One of our workmen during house renovations had to be hospitalized as he was coughing up blood, root cause found by the builders to not have used masks and eye protection while on another site laying insulation.Yes you will be hot & sweaty and look like a plonker while working with it and get a hard time from your kids but at least you will be around long enough to see them grow up

Just measured the opening - 30cm X 45cm. I can fit through it, but it's a squeeze and it's very near the lowest point of the roofline, so not much height above the hatch either. :-(

Perhaps buy one roll and try it - I reckon it'll be pretty tough though.....
