Kodi™ media center, formally known as XBMC™ Media Center, is an award-winning free and open source cross-platform software media player and entertainment hub for digital media for HTPCs (Home theater PCs). It uses a 10-foot user interface designed to be a media player for the living-room, using a remote control as the primary input device. Its graphical user interface (GUI) allows the user to easily browse and view videos, photos, podcasts, and music from a harddrive, optical disc, local network, and the internet using only a few buttons.

- Easy to use interface
- Plays almost any media file
- Free of charge

Confluence is the standard skin and is designed to be fast and user friendly.

With the skin Re-Touched, Kodi™ has now been enhanced to better work with larger phones and tablets as well. Kodi is not currently recommended for use with smaller phones.

===========

Kodi (formerly XBMC) is by FAR the best media center software for streaming your own purchased content from your home server. The Android version (and thus the Fire TV version) still has some kinks to work out, but overall this is a fantastic piece of software.

The Fire TV is a great platform for Kodi because the Quad-core ARM provides the horsepower for a great user experience on a low-power platform, and you get the ability to stream Netflix/Amazon Video/HBO GO/PBS Kids/Hulu Plus along with the best media center for your own collection.

If you have the patience to rip all of your DVDs and BluRays to your home server, Kodi is the best way to view them!

NOTE: This cannot be installed directly to the Amazon Fire TV.
You first need to download the Android apk and sideload the app to the Fire TV. Once done, go to Settings > Sync Amazon Purchases on the Fire TV, and the Kodi icon will appear on the Fire TV under Apps and Recent.

Be quick I can Imagine this getting taken down

Thanks!

Please note, this app cannot be installed directly to the Fire TV this way.

HOWEVER, you can download the Android apk from their website, sideload the app to the Fire TV, and when its installed if you buy this from the Amazon store and then go to Settings > Sync Amazon Purchases on the Fire TV, the proper app icon will appear on the Fire TV under Apps and Recent.

why would it get taken down?

surprised still not taken off lol

Can you stream to ps 4?

This software is legal.
you can add addons that show non legal material but they are not supported by Kodi.

Cheers. Worth seeing how it stands up against SMPC.

Thanks OP for the heads up. I noticed SPMC was listed too but had not seen it earlier. Both report as being incompatible with my Fire TV but OK for my tablet so I've snagged them anyway. Thanks.

Side load? It is very easy to side load the fire tv. You also don't need to root it!

If that's the case, why has SPMC been available for such a long time without being taken down?
SPMC

After being given the runaround, Amazon needs this and that downloading and being tech-savvy!
It's a very cold from me.
It may work for others.
Have a very BIG portion of good luck.

Don't know, but it's working fine on bb10.3

what are the addons for free content?

Kodi had been free on android for ages. Old deal, but great piece of software.

It's a media center, it won't get taken down. It's basically the same as plex and that is available (and advertised) on all platforms including playstation.

The only way to enable software decoding of those formats would be to pay a licensing fee

The reason it is not on any of the app stores is because of this: http://kodi.wiki/view/Android_FAQ#Why_is_XBMC_not_in_Google_Play.2C_OUYA_store.2C_Amazon_store.2C_etc.3F

by distributing the apk themselves outside of the app stores they do not have to remove any functionality.
You may remember that MX Player had to remove the AC3 codec a few months ago for the same reason.

However I find it strange that they have published it on the Amazon app store and there is no mention of this on the Kodi Blog.

This has always been free from XBMC/Kodi

I thought the same thing, *shrugs*

I've got Kodi and Plex installed on my network and use my Intel NUC (celeron) to play from. I'm a long time user/fan of XBMC and Kodi. I do think media plays a little better from Plex, and I can watch it nicely on my Panasonic TV as well through it's media player. Movies I still watch from Kodi though as there's something about that

I've got kodi installed on my Samsung Note 3 and side loaded it to my Fire TV using AGK Fire app on the Note 3. Both work brilliantly

this has always been free, am i missing something?

I think we're all missing something! XBMC has always been free. It's now renamed Kodi, and it's still free.

To summarise. An app that was free is still free!

I honestly have no idea what this is supposed to mean or say but I can tell you that sideloading Kodi, including the addition of a Kodi icon on the Home screen, is an easy 10 minute job.
I can also tell you that Kodi works flawlessly on the Fire TV.

Can't understand why this is a deal. In the 11 plus years I've been using it, it has never been anything other than free.

Genesis is the perfect add on for this

This has always been free. Not a deal. Cold.

From the forums:

"We're caught in a tight spot where we want to reserve the Kodi app ID on various stores, so other groups can't hijack Kodi installs or cause confusion, but we're still figuring out all the store stuff and if there will be issues or not. For the user, they don't really need to worry, but just to explain to people why we haven't really announced anything yet. We're taking baby steps. So far, the world hasn't burned down, so that's good, right? ;)"

Can i have this on my samsung smart tv? would be amazing

The intent behind those apps was to facilitate pirating stuff, people use this for legit stuff mostly

This is a free app anyway. You can download it from their site kodi.tv

SPMC is still the best choice for Android though.

koying (one of the official XMC maintainers) forked the code to add in patches and tweaks directed at ARM, Rockchip and Mediatek devices that didn't get put into the main XBMC code.

While the official XBMC/Kodi release will run fine for many people, it has its issues with others.

Unless you like bleeding edge nightlies, SPMC will do everything for you with no trouble.

He tends to only update when major bugs or big features have been added to the main code as well so there isn't constant updates for it.

If your lucky enough to have a rooted Amazon device (TV/Stick) then grab the launcher version and you will be able to set it as the default 'Home' app.

If not you can do a bit of fiddling with Llama and prety much get it to stay on top of the Amazon laucher most of the time.

Plex went in-app a couple of months ago and you will get a nag to buy after 60secs of watching something now. £3 for each device I think.
