For an extra £40 (or 29 if you go through quidco) you can get a Carrara Kraken, much better companants on all fronts....and if your not in a rush Halfords may even drop the price more as the do sometimes.

If you can't afford the extra then this is a better bike than the Kona for less

Good advice.

hi guys thanks for the replies keep the suggestions coming

That Trek weighs 1.5kG more than the Kraken

BOO when you have narrowed your choice down to the few, then post on Bikeradar forums and see what the guys there have to say as well.

Great forum and will be good for a new mountain bike owner to have in their favourites.

thanks for your thoughts Slam will do that

Kraken is a good suggestion by Slamdunkin. I have one and I took it to Wales Afan Forest, Quantocks, Surrey etc. It can easily take the abuse up to a certain level. I have buckled mu front wheel after jumping and hitting to tree! Unfrtunately no wings on Kraken
I think they are made by Merida Cycles. Only down side on the entry level MTBs (including Kraken) its front fork which is Srsuntour. They are rubbish if you are going to do some serious MTBing. I have replaced my one with Rock Shox. So depending on your level I suggest to replace fork. I got Kraken when it was on sale, so watch out for sale!
I hope this helps.
regards.

Sorry, I have forgotten to put famous say which works for MTB:

Cheap, Light, Strong : pick two!

The SR suntours XCR fork is a much better fork than many of the low end Rockshox forks like the Dart 2 and 3's which are absolute shyte. Suntour epicorn are a very well respected fork, so going by brand name isn't always a good guide. Rockshox don't really earn much respect untill you spend on Toras or Rubas.

Unfortunately I cannot say much about low end Rockshox. I have psylo which is ok. There is also the fact that things have moved on since I have seen srsuntour. But I appreciate what you say so I will keep in mind. Thanks.

I have a 2005 Lanai and it has been brilliant. The bottom bracket has just started playing up today, otherwise, all I have changed is the chain and pedals. It has a super quiet, smooth ride and has never let me down. I have ridden some steep trails and I commute a few miles to work each day. This deluxe model shown seems to be a real bargain, I don't think you will get such a good quality frame/ bike with discs anywhere!
