Wrist blood pressure monitors: Are they accurate?

"American Heart Association recommends using a home blood pressure monitor that measures blood pressure in your upper arm and not using wrist or finger blood pressure monitors."

Correct. BP varies significantly depending on the position of the wrist as well. Auscultating the Brachial artery in the upper arm (the way conventional arm monitors work) is the most reliable way to read your blood pressure (well, in the absence of ambulatory monitoring).

When selecting a BP monitor, make sure that it has been validated by the BIHS. There are many cheap ones in the list.

As above wrist not accurate waste of money- who on earth are voting hot on this “toy”

Even cheap upper arm BP monitors can be notoriously inaccurate. Something as important as high blood pressure needs a accurate device for measurement. If unsure on your own machine ask your GP when visiting next to compare a reading against their one.

Actually, there are 19 cheap upper arm monitors under £50 that have been clinically validated by the BIHS. For imstance, the Omron M2 Basic is only £25 at Amazon or Argos. Many others are around the same price point. It makes no sense buying a non-validated monitor, and definitely not a wrist one.
