Done with bikes? Ditching bike locks but not bikes sounds like a bad idea.

What locks were you using the £30 highly rated ones?

Thought it looked a good deal. Just under the free postage on Amazon by a penny why do they do that, really annoying. 12mm and above is supposed to be uncutable with bolt cutters will do me.
I have the silver version of this - never had a problem but always in company lockup all day or using public places no more than 2 hours - lock feels solid but I am sure that a portable grinder would sort it in no time.
Theres a YouTube video of this being snapped open in around 24 seconds, though in real life with it locked in place at an awkard angle would like last a few more seconds, handy as a 2nd lock, but I'd look at the higher end Kryptonite locks if you want to feel more secure

these locks are so good, seen so many broken brackets and bikes with frustrated thieves failing to break them
rodman02/11/2019 11:46

Said no one ever.[Image]

Different lock and all that.
I thought 12 mm was easy work for bolt cutters
If you lock it high up at an awkward angle it should be a deterrent enough.
But if your bike is asking to be stolen then no lock is going to help.

I know, if you can break Abus you can break anything.

don't forget to register the lock when you get it. they provide compensation if your bike is nicked as a direct result of breaking the lock. Also register your bike on bikeregister!

did you watch it all the way to the end, including where he says the skills required make it "not a real world threat?". show me a lock that can't be picked by the way. They all can.

I agree. I could probably bump most people's front door lock in 30 seconds too. Doesn't mean we shouldn't lock em though. Most locks are breakable if you have the determination. The problem is the cops don't give two hoots about people stealing them and most of the time nobody is brought to justice over it either.

And how would you prove this? They could pick the lock and/or take it with em for later disposal...

ok so don't register it, and while you're at it , don't insure it. and put a big sign on it saying "I don't believe in locks, nor insurance, nor guarantees". I would imagine there would probably be CCTV in most places.

Yeh I'm not arguing against you here. I'm just pointing out that the average thief isn't gonna care if you have a kryptonite or a yale or whatever. Just put a few cheap locks on your bike and save yourself 30 quid. The end result is the same if the thief is determined enough, only this way you don't also lose a £100 worth of locks in the process.

It's why I have insurance instead of an expensive lock.

?? What are u talking about? My point is the registration is less than pointless, not that normal insurance is pointless!

On Kryptonite website it also seems you need a minimum 5/10 lock rating for this offer to apply but this lock is 4/10... also it asks for a registration fee for number of years you want their indemnity so you're paying extra for this or?

Doesn't surprise me.

Several years ago I watched a local documentary where they had a bicycle registered and marked at a local police station. They then reported it stolen and later handed it in as found. The police did not contact the owner but instead sold it back to the researcher at a local market where they sell off bikes with untraceable owners. Just goes to show how little the police are interested in reuniting owners with bikes, this is why annually I spend more on bicycle insurance than I do on car insurance.
I had this. The bike thieve's couldn't cut it...so they cut the metal bike rack it was attached to. I recovered the bike around the corner with the lock still firmly attached to the bikes frame and wheel! Suckerrrrsss!
Call that a lock? Now this is a lock.

I wonder why this hasnt caught on. Locking the top wheel to a gate/lamppost upright? (please ignore the bracket on bottom)

It's not a bad idea,I try to use my D lock as high as I can it's 16.8mm thick nobody could get the leverage even with huge bolt cutters at that height, they rely on bracing one end of the bolt cutter handle on the floor when people have locked their bike on a low point with a D lock,.
I always think it's a shame when I see people have locked their bikes with cheap cable locks, even if they are thicker they can be cut through like butter

It's a shame they don't take the xenophobes as well, less benefits to pay out for.
Do people still steal bikes even if you remove and take the seat with u? Why not do that?
I have a £100 bike and a £6 cable lock currently.

Friends tell me to buy a £20 d lock like this and I just think....is it worth it?

Blaming locks for theft is like blaming spoon for obesity. I have been using bikes and locks for years. Can say for sure your misfortune is not general or common.

£100 BLO so it’s probably safe unlocked

Only kidding. No lock is completely safe and these D locks are better at preventing loss from bolt croppers but they have just moved to using battery angle grinders which are another ball game. Some insurance requires locks to be if a certain grade which could only be achieved using a D lock.
