KTC Butter Ghee 2 kg for £ 9 at ASDA

Found 11th Jul 2013
KTC Butter ghee, essential ingredient of Indian meal, quite cheap compared to normal store price of £11+, even the Asian grocery stores and so called cash & carry also don't offer ghee at this price. Available on ASDA groceries online as well as in store at Crawley, I am sure it is a national deal.

Makes your Biryani Ballistic.

Note: this is well over a years worth for an asian home. i.e.You dont need much, its potent.

Heart attack stuff !!!

I trust you never eat indian takeaways then

you wont get an authentic taste without using this stuff. I use it with sunflower oil and you really dont need that much.

Just avoid the vegetable ghee which is essentially hydrogenated vegetable oil and therefore not very good for you!

LOL

Do they give you free Beta Blockers with every purchase

What a bunch of hypocrites!!

It's about the deal
You don't need to feast on it
It does not need to be stored in a fridge & lasts a long time

But the clincher is that you've all eaten it as every take-away or restaurant uses it in thier curries....get real!!

Actually if you do a bit of googling, it seems the new wisdom is that animal fats are actually better for the heart than vege fats. Odd I know but this was from a health seminar we had at work not a crackpot website...

I've eaten about two mouthfuls of Indian food in my whole life, I just hate the mealy oily texture of it, more so than the taste. This congealed butter stuff isn't exactly spurring me on to try it again. Give me an MSG laden Chinese meal any day of the week.

Indian takeaways don't use this stuff as much as before, I'm Asian myself and even we don't use this stuff, have to say though, it does taste amazing on parathas!

Got it for £6.99 in costco recently.

I love ghee, ghee vara parathas are the best.

good deal

Good deal. The stuff is nice and not as bad people are making out if used in moderation. One tea spoon of this stuff in say a curry for 5-6 people is more than enough.

Clearly if you go spreading it on everything like it was margarine then you'll have clogged arteries and loose buttholes too!

I've worked with asian restaurants in the past, as a consultant... some do use this stuff but more and more of them are starting to take note of trying to make their dishes healthier. Not all, but a lot are. If you ever dislike something, think its too oily or greasy etc. then let them know. If you scoff it all up coz its tasty and then complain on a forum weeks later then it's hardly doing anyone any good.

Depends on where you work, Department of Health or an Indian takeway?

Wonder how many people making disparaging comments here eat Mc D's, BK, English Breakfast, Crisps, cakes, carbonated drinks, energy drinks, Subway and so on and so on

Hardly the best diet in the world here in the UK, in fact one of the worst.

Everything in moderation my Granddad said who lived till his 90's

sorry, OP, cold for this horrid product.

this is the worst thing that can ever be called as ghee.
very honestly, i dont know what ever goes into it, but 100% sure this is not ghee.

easiest way to make ghee is to buy unslated butter from your supermarket and boil it on low flame for around 10 minutes.
never buy this horrid stuff!!!

Just for your MSG laden food, you're tempting me to convert to Chinese food... let me see how quickly I could turn

I await your research to back any of that up.

Not new wisdom at all, old wisdom by the fact we consumed high saturated fats for thousands of years and now know how they affect our bodies nutritionally. The new wisdom is that vegetable fats almost chemically identical to plastic are good for us. Those 'healthy' vegetable fats people eat are just as bad as trans fats as soon as they've been heated.

ghee (not this one) made from pure butter has been the secret brain food of Indians for many thousands of years.
this is not new,
but as someone already said , anything in moderation is fine, but in excess is dangerous.

Secret brain food!?

They can keep it, i dont want to work in a damn call centre.

On a more serious note, this is bad stuff but not half as bad as hydrogenated/trans fats. And its not used in much other than pilau/biryany rice at indians (but they use hydrogenated fats in those too) . Mc d's anyone? Fish and chips? Fried chicken? All trans fat fests! (_;)

So I'm confused now, what's the healthiest option out of ghee/ butter/margarine

Well, it all depends on who you believe, but it could be that in the same order that you wrote them. I still have to make my mind about this matter though.

If anyone is interested in, among other things, the animal-fats-are-better point of view, I can recommend reading this book: "Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook That Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats".

Lubes up your arteries.

This stuff adds incredible flavour and fragrance. It's ok once in a while. Just don't go overboard and have it everyday.

Butter and Margarine both have bad aspects to them and some 'good' ones, margarine being slightly healthier. Ghee on the other hand is clarified butter which is basically milk fat rendered from butter and is in no way good for you as all the goodness from butter has been removed.
