Back in stock: LaCie 3TB Minimus USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop Drive £99.99 from businessdirect.bt.com

Unlike other external hard drives that are normally preformatted in NTFS (Windows), HFS+ (Mac), or FAT32 (for both Windows and Mac, with file sizes limited to 4GB or less), the Minimus comes with a 100MB temporary partition that contains LaCie Setup Assistant software. The software prompts you to run it the first time you plug the drive into a computer and offers to format the drive into either NTFS or HFS+.

Or if you're not a fan of LaCie the WD My Book 3tb USB3 is £108.49 from Amazon amazon.co.uk/Boo…1-2

How good is the LaCie brand compared to seagate?

Famous design but not sure about it's drive quality who knows they might use Seagate driver inside lol?

One of the reviews here: testfreaks.co.uk/ext…-0/ might say (seems to be reviews of more than one HD size)?

I've read elsewhere that LaCie use Seagate, WD or Hitachi drives now but I can't confirm that (my old 500gb LaCie was a Samsung drive - the drive still works after 5+ years but the power supply has died).

What size of hand does does the dude in that image have - this is a 3.5" hard-drive. He must be Andre the Giant.

Heat added

LOL - also the "whoosh" graphic to emphasise the "ultra-fast USB 3.0 performance"!!

Heat added, think it's good deal BTW.

Lacie are most likely using Seagate hard drives now, for none other reason then it was purchased by them last August.

Im not a huge fan of Seagate per se but the deal is hot for a 3tb drive. voted hot but i wont be purchasing one. its either WD or hitachi for me

Same price at dabs.com. £2.10 customer discount for me. Amazing!!

Does it float like what it does in the picture?

Awesome deal

A levitating external hard drive for £99.99, saving desk space and money.

Any idea on the usable space once formatted? (probably to NTFS)

About 2.7TB

Is the hand included?

Which should I go for, this Lacie or

Toshiba 3TB StorE Canvio USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive?

both are similar prices on Dabs.

Good price for a 3TB USB 3.0 - voted hot for that reason but personally prefer Buffalo or WD drives. Buffalo being the preffered option for me but unfortunately they are quite expensive. I think £140 for a 3TB USB 3.0 - in the grand scheme of things, still worth it knowing how good they are.

The Toshiba is out of stock. Performance wise at USB2 the LaCie is slightly better, at USB3 they're much the same:

Thanks mhuk, it does say the Toshiba is expected back in 3-4 days and is almost €10 cheaper for me so might go with it.

Everything looked great till I saw the seagate thing.

Good price if you can handle the noise it'll make.

WARNING : Things you should know about this drive;

- there is a manual power on button you have to press to start it, it doesn't automatically start up when you power up the computer its attached to
- by default it's only formatted to 2tb. I had a devil of job using various command line tools to get it up to the 3tb (2.7tb) on Win7.

Just bought a N40l micro server. Is it worth buying these, ripping them open, and installing the drives into the server? Or are there better deals if I just want a 3tb drive?

The Toshiba has an Hitachi hard drive: Hitachi HDS5C3030BLE630

The Buffalo 3TB has a WD drive inside as well (more details on the Buffalo thread).
