Great deal!

really funny! I put an order in at amazon for 2 of these all of 45 minutes ago :-) Great minds!

Had this in my basket for a couple of weeks now at that price just haven't acted on it to buy it. But I have the 80GB version as a backup drive and it's lasted 2 1/2 years no problems, so I can vouch for the quality of it.

This is the cheapest I've seen it but personally it's the worst of my 3 externals

I have 2 seagates [500g that maplin had on special christmas week] and an older seagate 400g

It's the noisiest external I've ever owned. It wuuurs and wurrs at random moments and is really unecessarily noisey with it. When it's quiet, it's quiet, but the random wuuuuring really gets annoying.

No problem whatsoever with reliability though.

Both the seagates outperform this Lacie imo

The noise factor alone certainly means I wont be buying another one. I should of gone with my initial instincts when I wondered why lacie needed porshe to sell it's products. When the main selling angle on a product isnt performance but another companys branding, it raises questions

Did Porsche "design" it? If so they must have given the brief to the teaboy.

That isn't a swipe at the post or the deal btw.

Good piece of kit. I have been using mine for over two months now with no real complaints

Nice price, my Lacie 250 is quiet as a mouse.

Porche designed the case that's all, simple and discreet, it doesn't need to prove its performance, Lacie has sold HW for years and long term users know of its reputation.

There is a slight almost like a humming kind of noise on my wooden desk, but its barely noticeable when it's next to my tower, plus since I switch it off when I'm finished backing stuff up or temporarily shifting some files for later use/editing it never bothers me. In fact I've had times I've not noticed that I'd left it on after finishing using it, and then a couple of hours later I'll notice the front light is still on and realise I forgot to switch it off.

13 1-star reviews on amazon say to me that this can't be the most reliable of products... Although I have refrained from voting, as most external hard drives don't really enjoy being thrown about or fed to the dog.

Totally agree. If you look at the PD kettle, fountain pens or watches they have likeable and streamlined cases made from the best materials in high quality factories, and are supplied with 5 year warranties.

This just looks like they were told not to increase the cost above a plain enclosure and then slap thier brand logo on it. So you get 8 grooves and some printed lettrers. Woo-hoo :whistling:

If you are not going for the style, save few quids by going for this one

We bought 10 at work and every single one of them have been outperformed by older USB drives around the office (Seagate and Maxtor mainly), they're so slow that if you're copying something onto/off of the drive in one explorer window and try to look at the drive contents in another window, explorer will lock up. I'd buy a more mainstream brand as they are slow and very frustrating, not a bad price though.

If it's to be used with a desktop PC I'd rather buy ]this seagate for about the same price. eSATA rather than usb, so far far faster.

instead of getting a wireless HDD, will this work if I plug it into my wireless router?

title states 7200 rpm, 8 mb cache but the details of the specs says 5400 rpm, 16 mb. so i emailed amazon uk to clarify, the bloke replies to say it's 5400 rpm, 8mb ....... which is highly unlikely if one was to go by the manufacturer's ID *doh.
