Transfer rate: 30MB/s. Is that a syntax error or what!

Recommend people check the reviews before buying..
This is SLOOOW...

Here's why -

This = 30 Mbps
USB2 = 480 Mbps
FireWire = 400 Mbps
eSATA = 3.0 Gbps!

Frankly I'd rather pay £50 for a 1TB internal drive and wack it in an enclosure.

Hot..

how? cold cause it's overpriced and slow.

THIS IS A NETWORK DRIVE - IT WILL NEVER BE AS FAST AS A USB DRIVE OR A FIREWALL DRIVE.

+1.

30MB is fast for a NAS if this manages that.

+2!

30MB/s is very good for a consumer level NAS. I think my ReadyNAS claims something like 25 and that's supposedly pretty good.

OMG the same old stuff again about NAS drives !!! and the speed please take a quick look at this site before everyone starts quoting speeds and stuff.... lyberty.com/tec…tml

Could you post a link to a NAS enclosure for £41.99 or less please.

No, this is 360Mb/s or 30MB/s. About the same speed as USB (which never achieves anything close to 480Mb/s). NAS Drives are typically slower so I wouldn't be surprised if the 30MB/s might actually be the USB speed.

Of course, these are the speeds of the connections, the hard drives at the other end often can't even acheive the 30MB/s of USB if you're transfering lots of small files (which they're slow at).

Maplins had one for £25 but I forget the brand.

Others are out there, but I couldn't immediately find this particular one out there.

CCL have them cheap, but because they're so cost effective they sell out fast

Also...
30 megabytes = 240 megabits
FastEthernet is 100 megabits so I guess if you can't network via HDMI (1.4?) or SATA or perhaps firewire you'd not get that much speed anyway...

I agree, too many people looking at 1tb and the price and not reading or knowing exactly what a NAS is. I'm not bothered about heat and rep just pointing out to people when i see offers.

Thanks for the link!

I would have thought if it was gigabit ethernet adapter in the NAS, cat 6 (10/100/1000 base-tx MB/s) then it would be between USB & eSATA in terms of performance. It's enough to stream 1080p HD video. Although all sides within a network would have to be gigabit compliant to take full advantage!

The fact that it has gigabit Ethernet has no bearing at all on the transfer speed as even some of the really slow ones have that and manage less than 10MB/sec. The limitation with NAS drives is usually the weak processor that can’t manage the throughput.

Both for IDE drives though.
(I knew they would be before looking, and I was right)

So now show us the 1Tb IDE drives for the balance of the price.

Yes I know, that's why I also quoted that link in my post thus indicating I had read the information there...
The trade of is power vs price albeit for the general public the latter being most important in consideration of a purchase.

One of the reviews quotes a transfer rate of 30 Mbps which makes this useless as a backup device as it would literally take over a day to restore 1TB of data at that rate.
To use a NAS a backup device as well it’s better to either buy a fast one or one that also has a USB2 connection so you can connect it directly to a PC for data restoral.

Is this fast enought to stream HD MKV files to my tv via my dlink dir-635
