LAPHROAIG 10 Year Old Islay Malt Whisky 70cl £20 @ Sainsburys

Found 18th Oct 2011
I was looking for a smokey whisky to enjoy over the coming cold months and I came across this Islay one at Sainsburys. Normal price £28.79 (currently so at Tesco or even on Amazon)

Laphraoig is the most unique of any single malt, on Islay or anywhere else in Scotland. Noted for its medicinal, seaweed and iodine-like qualities, Laphroaig is controversial. People either love or hate this whisky for its unique, bandage quality. Founded in 1815, Laphroaig’s offerings begin at the 10-year range and their older whiskies are eagerly sought out by single malt enthusiasts.

The most richly flavoured of all Scotch whiskies.

Seems a good deal.

Also consider - Highland Park, Old Pulteney, Talisker

Cracking price. Nice Whiskey if you like a very peaty/smokey flavour.

Nice find (_;)

Beauty this is my favourite. If you like peaty ones also try Bowmore its very similar but not as peaty.

Scorchio

Smoking hot

Lovely stuff; the second most peaty mainstream whisky after Ardbeg, and one of my personal favourites. It won't be everybody's cup of tea, particularly if you're new to whisky or have a preference for Speyside or lowland single malts.

Great price, though.

Sacrilege! Nothing else comes even remotely close to Ardbeg, the grandaddy of them all.

TCP flavour, but very popular nevertheless. Good find.

Agree but can't get hold of it anymore from supermarket/off license. Ordering it off the net means once you've paid for the whisky then a heavy delivery charge puts it at nearly £45.00 a bottle. So as much as I like it I'm reluctant to pay that kind of money so Laphraoig is the next best choice.

Yep, I've also struggled to get it, although thankfully my local Peckhams have some back stock at a pretty reasonable price. If you're having to pay £45 quid, you might as well go the whole hog and pay £50 for the incredible Ardbeg Uigeadail (world whisky of the year).

Highland Park, Isle of Jura and Balvennie Double Wood are my favourites

Ooooh, Great find. I'll be stocking up!

Good deal and a good quality Whisky but only if you have a a taste for the peated flavour.

Thanks very much for letting me know what other whiskeys are smokey, much appreciated.

I'm not much of a drinker but I do enjoy quality wines/spirits. This is the first time I actually bought a smokey whiskey and I thought for £20 it's not bad. I'll make a list of the others you've kindly suggested and if I happen to see them in a pub or anywhere for sale I'll certainly try them out. always like to keep learning X)

not my kind of Whisky, like licking marshland.

Great price for a solid whisky. It should be one of those main bottles on hand for everyday drinking hehe

Don't forget " Lagavullin " . . . . . another antiseptic special

Bought 4 bottles. Cheers.. hic. Got a £4 off voucher with the first two bottles so £19 a hit. Bargain, c'mon Friday night.

Just been to my local and they'd sold out!!! So got a bottle of 'Singleton' to try as i've never had it before, this was also reduced to £20 from £29.99

Laphroaig is a great whisky. My favourite is still lagavulin, but I've really grown to love this distinct taste, great for the autumn too!

Was my favourite until I tried the caol ila 12 year old, think that just edges it.

Ardbeg is really nice too, but if you haven't tried the caol, I seriously recommend it.

Horrible horrible stuff! Tastes like TCP!

I love other Whisky though! Glenfiddich mmm

Quote "TCP flavour" and i thought it was just me! Nice find for those who prefer it,Talisker for me though!

as they seem to be so many connoisseurs around, may I ask, if I am after a SMOKEY (not peaty) favour, which one would be best? tks

highland park has a light smokey finish, without masses of peat.
johnnie walker green will also give you a very light smoke, but with the fresh spicy speyside taste.

Glenfiddich isn't fit to disinfect the Laphroaig/Ardbeg mash tuns and stills - it's the McDonalds of the whisky world: bland, soulless, mass market rubbish.

Singleton is a great dram - if you like it, I can strongly recommend Benromach, which has just started producing whisky again in the past few years. Definitely worth checking out before it becomes really popular (ergo expensive).

They have the Caol Ila 12 year for around £24 on offer at Waitrose at the moment

I like my scotch whisky and took advantage of this deal ! In my opinion it was a horrible dram, leaves the taste of burnt ash in the back of the throat for an hour afterwards. Ill stick to my Glenmorangies and Glenfiddach. Im sure others will have found it very tasty though.

Cracking deal just picked up a few bottles. Cheers

Feel free to send the remainder of the bottle on to me and I will dispose of it securely for you.

good people are still buying it, even after more than a week it's been posted, great!

I am actually a bit surprised by the taste, it is not really smokey as I thought, but it is very particular and a lot of it (eg the taste)

As jasondunlop said, it really leaves a very long-lasting aftertaste, but I find this particularly nice, it is the longer lasting aftertaste of anything I have ever tried - I think I enjoy the aftertaste more than actually drinking it!!! I like it with nice cheese mmmm...

I picked up the last bottle of Chivas Regal on sainsburys shelf today. £14.00, normally £25.00
Had to buy something to take the rancid taste of that Laphroiag whisky out of my throat!

There really is no hope for you if you prefer Chivas Regal to Laphroaig.
