Lawrence Of Arabia [4K Ultra HD] @ Amazon Video- Buy for £3.99

Found 5th Dec
I am new to Amazon streaming but thought this looked like a mega deal.I am planning on buying to watch over Christmas and have heard the restored version is stunning.

4k Ultra HD version captured and mastered in 4k. David Lean's splendid

biography of the enigmatic T. E. Lawrence paints a complex portrait of

the desert-loving Englishman who united Arab tribes in battle against

the Ottoman Turks during World War I.

One thing i noticed when trying to buy is this below-i guess TVs with the Amazon app and Amazon Fire tv etc will have this as standard?

This movie requires a copy protection (HDCP)-compliant display for HD viewing. We'll automatically provide the Standard Definition (SD) version if your display isn't compliant or if your Internet connection isn't fast enough to support HD.

How on earth did you find this version ?
What search did you use?
I just searched this on PC and still can't find it but when using the link get it straight away?

I know! Its a pain to find as i found it once then couldn't find it again and then managed to find it through google i.e. " amazon video Lawrence Of Arabia 4K Ultra HD"

Almost as if they are hiding it...

That's crazy - surely a selling point

I think it normally only comes up in searches on eligible devices. My Samsung 4k TV app shows them no bother, but not my phone. Google must bypass their filters

My new Hisense can play 4K and UHD through the built-in Amazon app so i can only imagine it would be compatible with this.

Thanks OP. It is indeed stunning quality. Heat added.

Did you spot any other good UHD prices? I found a few more at £3.99 via Google. Sure there must be a load more, but ridiculously hard to find. Anyway here's a few more -

No subtitles unfortunately. Going to have to get refund.

Surprising as every other option for LoArabia has subtitles.
Amazon are very poor when it comes to selling digital films with subtitles

Sorry for being dense, Is this just a Amazon stream and not a physical disc?
Edited by: "strocky" 5th Dec

It's a digital film, that you watch on any device with Amazon or Prime Video. (No physical hard copy)
Streams fine over wifi or you can download it to watch on the go.

An excellent film and a very, very good HotDeal

Had it on Hdd for ages .. No rip off Amazon account. Way too much crap on there now

This might help for searches, you basically need to search on google/bing, not on amazon.

There's also another thread with a list of prices although some may have expired.

The Guns Of Navarone is also £3,99 in UHD

Mentioned this deal a couple of weeks ago but nobody seemed particularly interested.
Searching and filtering UHD content is far too time consuming, not impressed by Sky Q, Amazon or Google Play but hopefully things will improve next year.

Cheap price so might get as a demo/benchmark, but bear in mind this will look poor compared to a 4K bluray. The data rate on Amazon (at best) is only 16-18 mbps, bluray 4K is 82-128mbps. Full HD (1080p) on Amazon is 9-12mbps, so the 4K stream has only 50% more data to produce 400% the pixels. You lose tonal range, fine detail, colour/saturation, and most clearly shadow detail. So yes you get a theoretical 4K image, but you'd get a much better image from a 1080p bluray and upscaling to 4K.

Yes that is a good point- if blu ray's data-ransfer rate is 54 mbps then that 3 times what can be streamed. I've got an old Toshiba blu ray player so might brush that off and see what my TV can do up-scaling wise. At the moment 4K stuff steamed still looks pretty great to me but will be interested in comparing.

It was downscaled to 4K. Yeah that is right.

actually the original source exceeds 4k quality... the 65mm film stock it was shot on can go upto 12k...

This was filmed in 1962. Why would you want a 4k version? If you record a sound file at 128kbps, what's the point of re-encoding it into FLAC? Isn't that what's happening here?

AFAIK, they didn't have 4k cameras in 1962.

"can go". But does it? I have a hard drive that *can* store 24/192 sound files but if it wasn't recorded that way it makes no difference? 65mm film stock with a poor lens still produces a crap picture?

I don't know. Happy to be corrected. But nothing shot in 1962 ever looks great....

remember these movies where shot to go up on a huge screen. the resolution is incredible. its only from years of downscaling to vhs, tv, dvd and bluray that we think of these older movies as poor quality. in reality theyre far superior in resolution than digital. digital technology is only now catching up.

lawrence of arabia got an 8k restoration back in 2012 and is meant to be excellent in quality. there are plenty of reviews about it.

all the old classics should look great in 4k. (bridge on the river kwai is another thats just come out) theyll finally look like they did back in the 50/60s etc when they where originally released. dont let the age put you off.

It’s a 1962 film cleaned up NOT 4K fact sorry good price though even with its deceiving description

You all must be bored.

Hot.

Tis a great film but the blu ray version is as far as it needs to be taken. Even that was pushing it vis a vis Anthony Quinn's green hued prostheic nose.

You'd be surprised how many films are not filmed in digital 4k. I guess the 4k blu ray release of Dunkirk isn't 4k because it was filmed on physical film, going by your logic

Don't comment about things you don't understand. Seriously.

Is this only available to watch on supported devices, it didn't show on my firestick, a search for the film only found a restored version which it prompted me to buy.

But...but....the 21:9 version will come out soon. No more black bars.

My TV supports HDCP 2.2 yet the built-in app doesn't show any of these 4K Amazon releases. It doesn't make any sense as Google Play supports 4K out-of-the-box. Oh well, I guess I just won't buy any movies from Amazon.

I am going to ask a newbie question- if I were to buy this UHD and my internet/TV was not capable of playing it - then would it automatically downscale to 1080P?
As the re-mastered version is £5.49

Yes Monkey. People come here and make informed decisions on information they read. We are here to help people make the right decision. Making crass ill informed comments that sound cynical in nature is just going to lead to people missing out on this good deal.
