Portuguese HERE.

Nice, but one thing to keep in mind is, whoever is wanting to learn portuguese must realise there are two very different accents and certain changes in vocabulary/grammar depending on whether they want to learn Brazilian portuguese or continental.
This one mentioned is Brazilian.
Now we are finally leaving the EU, French is pretty much an obsolete language. Spanish is definitely the language to learn

Actually, you do have a good point there

PS Here's another phrase you may find useful (from Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wik…eys )

"Cheese-eating surrender monkeys", sometimes shortened to "surrender monkeys", is a pejorative term for French people. It was coined in 1995 by Ken Keeler, a writer for the television series The Simpsons, and has entered two Oxford quotation dictionaries.

My children are sadly also learning french at school - reason given by head teacher as to why not something more appropriate to today's world, loike Spanish, Russian, Chinese......... because that's what the teachers learned when they were at school, and there's noit enough money in the budget to train them to teach anything else !!

Spot on. I like French as a language but the ones you've mentioned are the future, along with English of course. I find Spanish is also a better base language to learn others like Italian, Portuguese, etc.

UK schools need to pick up on future languages now. They'll become even more important as time goes on. In many industries and parts of Europe now you'll struggle to get a job without knowing at least 3 languages.

Russian or Chinese? Probably two of the hardest languages there are. Hardly appropriate for GCSE study is it.

spanish & chinese you may have a point, but russian is spoken by few outside russia.

whereas a huge proportion of central and northern africa speak french as well as parts of the middle east, and far east too. and if you learn french you're a good way to learning spanish too. then there's the vast amount of literature, philosphy, art, etc in french. and until ww2 it was the international language of diplomacy (business was english and science in german). it's more widespread and relevant than you think.

a bit of debate on which language is the best to learn:

You would be surprised how often you can hear russian all over the world. Way more often than French I bet you! Further more due to Brexit it would be appropriate to learn the language of potential new trading partners (China ) not old ones France.... And remember, "You can't have a cake and eat it"
There is another one available I heard: learn Arabic with MosqueLingua
The argument for Spanish over French - saying French is "behind the times" somehow is absurd.

How so?

What's the argument for Spanish? Latin America? Where Portuguese is also spoken...

As mentioned, French is spoken throughout North Africa, the middle east, and also Vietnam.

And they have some great music (especially Metal and Trip Hop), excellent cinema, and a lot of culture you can better appreciate with an understanding of the language. I wouldn't class Spanish cinema or music on the same level. I think there's a pretty strong argument for French cinema regardless of personal biases.

And personally I think it sounds much better. Whether spoken by a male or female. Spanish - especially spoken by males sound terrible to me.

Anyhoo, just a rant belatedly passing through
