I think this may be the cheapest it's been.

I haven't got this set, but I rarely find the big Technic sets disappointing.

It gets well reviewed on lego.com:

I know! - Half of me felt daft putting it in the kids section.
The last big Technic set we built was the Unimog - That's a really good set.
I've always fancied the rock crawler too.

What's the best excuse a grown man can use to buy this for himself?..

You don't need an excuse. Just "come out" as an "AFOL" !

this is a great set, I am 41 and my wife said I was a big kid for buying it, but us blokes never grow up, I have the VW Camper Van and the Mini as well and I love the all

I'm glad I'm not the only 40-something who wants to buy this!! I think it would sit well with the three cars and the x wing fighter that I already have...

What excuse, no reason to have one if Lego is a hobby. I got this and the Limited edition Rock Crawler (41999) at the same time. I didn't need an excuse as they are great sets. This one has been on of the best builds in my experience, the functions don't work that well but it's great fun to build and looks fantastic.

I have this set. It took about a week to build and it looks awesome, about 2 ft long!!!
This is a bargain!

Wholly ****, kids nowadays get the best toys.:(

Of course, if you are a 40-something fan of lego, you really need to get yourself the Mindstorms set.
£200, but worth every penny (I think I paid £140 for the NXT2 version).

One thing at a time, lol, I've got the new Volvo tipper coming from Father Christmas this year.

Thanks OP, picked up 1 at the Reading branch this morning. The box is massive and it looks really good!

Quidco tracking at 3% as well so if that comes through then that brings the price down to £97.47.

I love the smell of a bargain in the morning!.

Yep, I have my eye on that one...I'm actually trying to convince my boss we need some for work...purely for professional reasons of course...

I got this for £70 last year on Tesco, used £35 of Tesco points on double up. One of the best Lego sets I've built to date, the controls and gear box are really complex, (still baffles me how it works!). I'm 27 which I think is even more of an embarrassing age to 'play with Lego' than 40!

It was on sale for £70? That's incredibly cheap. Cheapest on Amazon was £99.99.

Sod it, I ordered one. I'm 34... I wonder if any of these are actually going to kids?

Just ordered, these are/were £169:99 in toys r us.

For those who want to go the extra mile. Here's some instructions and part list to create an even better version. I was a little disappointed the superstructure doesn't rotate on it's own.
This makes it into a full remote controlled, all functions simultaneously, rotating crane, with improved gearing/movements. God knows what the extra parts will cost tho!

Thanks OP but, I think this will still get lower. I remember when the Unimog was half price.

Half! I thought I got a bargain when the Unimog was £105!

Avoid Symths Toys if ordering online.

please note that discount coupons for in-store purchases cannot be redeemed against Click & Collect reservations

And they only reserve goods for 1 day after ordering. But their 'Available for Collection' email not sent out until 16:06 - so not seen until getting home after tea so 7:30pm - and store shuts at 8pm .... so giving less than 30 mins to collect.

And up to a 5 day refund of your money.

And a very poor response - ie none - from Customer Service in response to my overnight email.

Throughly NOT recommended.

But good news the kit is £112 from Amazon and Tesco's Direct (with points, etc, etc)
- for pain free reliable shopping:-)

My set turned up after 36 hours after order placed via smyths, very quick delivery one happy bunny. Shade over £100.

Just wanted to add, last year I bought 2 big sets from toys r us who were running a promotion, lego Star Wars, buy one get one half price, I asked them to price match which they did and they also honoured the buy one get one half price, had the millennium falcon and the republic gunship for £140! Took a bit of haggling but got there in the end.
