Some good savings there.

I was amazed at how this toy has changed since I played with it, in the 1960's

Then, most sets just contained blocks, windows and roof elements and if you were really lucky a motor and wheels. I could spend hours making things (ended up as a civil engineer, so that was maybe why)

Now, it seems every set is based on a film or TV series. Surely, when a few of the pieces get lost, the 'play factor' is reduced.

Yep, there have been a lot of similar complaints in recent years about this. I love Lego but know what you mean. I picked up a nearly complete vintage pirate lego set recently, there were multiple ways of building it and it didn't matter that some bits were missing, me and my boy just made it up in other ways.

Probably couldn't get away with that with an Imperial Star Destroyer.

Prior to franchising Lego was in trouble. missing pieces always detracts simply because you have less. play factor is still there because using Lego is still able using your imagination for your own creations.

we tend to buy sets and then once they are broken down we create all sorts of things

to be fair, there aren't that many unique bricks in most of these sets so technically you could build something similar with your own bricks.

Everyone above us, but the fans call for accurate Star Wars reproductions and to be fair the things look like they should. There's few and far between sets available where you just build tho.

Still that's what the old 80s box of lego is for.

Quite tempted by the Z95....
