For less than 70 quid more you get an i3 processor and ssd, as well as battery battery life

I ld pay that just to buy from amazon rather than Currys (awful customer service)
But i3 and ssd alone is worth the 70 quid as well as better battery

Couldn't agree more
And what if you don't have 70 quid more?
Cheers - I originally only wanted to spend £200 and can only squeeze to £250 - obviously you can get far better computers if you pay more but looking something good for my max £250 and hoped this would do- if there’s anything better sub £250 PLEASE do let me know- thanks

To be honest, that's not a laptop I'd recommend to anyone at that price. The unspecified Pentium processor on that is perhaps at best an N4200. The AMD chip benchmarks about 10% faster than this. I've not had the opportunity to research the comparative merits of the GPUs in both machines, but I suspect that the AMD might have the edge though happy to be corrected by some proper evidence here.

The Pentium processor can most likely be overclocked to perhaps 50%+ better performance depending on the cooling in the Lynx, but that's not guaranteed and will also heavily affect battery life.

@dromoreboy At work just now, so don't have time to do any proper research in this area, but my gut feeling is that if £200 is your budget for a laptop then go for a reputable refurb from the usual suspects that crop up here. Many of them have decent older-gen i5 processors in them that will benchmark at twice the speed of these processors and some will have SSDs in them and possibly 6-8GB of RAM.

Quick Update: Something like this @£250 looks decent hotukdeals.com/dea…537
The CPU benchmarks about 70% faster than this. Has 240GB SSD. Is good size and nice and thin. It also has 1440p touch-screen, if that's your bag. I know which one I'd rather have.

I question your knowledge the moment you mention overcooking on a laptop. It isn't just about performance, AMD processors have horrible power consumption worth their poor performance. Would take a modern quad core atom over an AMD A6/a9

Thanks for looking, it’s going to be a Christmas present so needs to be brand new in the box, £250 is my top end unfortunately, so looking the best of a bad bunch I’m afraid. It’s for a student for tech, so only needs it for Word, PowePoint and Internet. It’s not for a gamer or a video editor or a graphic designer or anything like that.

Why's there always some little berk with a bee in their bonnet, thinking that they're a tech God and fly off the handle any time someone mentions something that differs from this week's reddit tech discussion. Get over yourself, sonny.

I'm well aware of relative power consumption of both processors and know that the A6 is going to be markedly less efficient. It's a 15W -vs- a 4-6W part, so obviously it's going to consume more power and generate more heat. The truth of the matter is that both laptops are not terribly performant and about what you'd expect at this price-point.

Well I stand corrected and bow to your wisdom good sir
I'd wait for Black Friday and try at least bag one with an SSD. This one is fine for surfing the web and not much else - once you've waited an eternity for it to boot up that is.

So at this point, Dell Outlet has a couple of Scratch & Dent (new but with possibly minor marks) Inspiron 5570s. They're only 4415u processors but still 50% faster than the AMD part and only 2/3 of the power consumption. Full HD screen as well. There's a 15% off code of DOINSP5570 that brings it down to around £233 including vat and delivery.

That might be something to consider. Its always hard to link to sell outlet from here so best to have a quick check. There were only a handful left when I checked so you'd have to be quick.

Looking for a new laptop and found this one for the same £250 price
hotukdeals.com/dea…093

Could do an extra 4GB RAM and the newer N4100 chipset but outside of refurbished or imported deals, could be a better buy. What do you think?
Everything about this laptop is dreadful. I'd prefer not to buy. It will be better to give money than to give this as a present; that way the person can buy a refurbished computer they will be happy with.

This or a Chromebook? Depends what it is to be used for. For using it as a browser some productivity tools a Chromebook will be better value.

I don't normally recommend chromebooks, but they have their uses. Refurbished/reconditioned/secondhand is better value at this price point.

I purchased a scratch and dent dell which shows no marks so it as new, however it had an amd processor which had dreadful battery life and made the laptop unusable for me. It may be fine as a desktop replacement. As a laptop you can work away from a powerpoint one with an Intel processor will be better.

Currys - so you know already this is bottom end spec and old technology. You can do better at this price.

The gemini has a lot of bad reviews - mainly due to the battery dying after a few months and poor build quality which shows after a few months.

Looked at that one... the title for it and the ACTUAL specs are different. For eg the title states 8GB ram but the actual spec says 4gb. 3GB ssd? Actual says 128.

Good old amazon...

Then buy a used one on ebay. There is a lot of junk laptops in poor condition on ebay, but you can easily filter those by selecting listings with many high quality photos with a carefully written description. Shiny keyboards and trackpads are a sign of heavy use and should be avoided. There are some gems hidden amongst the junk.

I always buy my laptops on ebay. For £250 I would buy a Lenovo T-series in excellent condition:
