I had been looking for a laptop that has a large-ish, usable touch screen (without the keyboard having to be on the way) and decent specs. That's for my mother, who I'm not sure if she would find it easy to jump to a tablet, but a hybrid laptop seems like a good case.

Options where:
- HP Slateware 14 ( hotukdeals.com/tag/dea…445 ) @£200 -but worried about HP's infamous support -which, being heavily modified android, is quite important- and also not sure how usable it would be for an inexperienced Windows user
- Asus Transformer -but screen was too small
- Lenovo Yoda 2 -but it is too expensive
- Lenovo N20P -but reviews find performance and screen too mediocre

Finally I found this deal about the same laptop that I'm posting, only with 1366x768 resolution, faster CPU and a bit cheaper (thanks chriscarterstevens):
hotukdeals.com/tag/dea…599

I was about to order this, but found that there's also a full HD IPS panel version, with a slower CPU, for 40 extra pounds. It also exists in Amazon Warehouse deals @ £356.17 , with "Item is in original, pristine packaging. Missing owner / user manual" ( amazon.co.uk/dp/…1-1 ).

Please note that the "useful info" in Very's description are wrong, as can verified by the reviews and the title of the product, this has indeed a 1920x1080 panel, which is also IPS instead of TN -well worth the extra 40 pounds and the CPU compromise.

I emailed Very about it as well, but they just ignored me (so much for the claimed 6-hours email response time).

There is also a black version, here: very.co.uk/len…659

I have ordered one and will post my opinion, when I get the time to try it out.

329 is for the low-resolution TN screen, 369 is for the 1080p IPS one.

I like it

was getting interested to buy then saw an i3 processor.. thought may be not for me

So what are the processors like on this? I know that you can't judge a book by its cover. So a good i3 is better than a crap i5 for example!

This is not a core i3 processor (Very did a crappy job with their description), it is a 3558U, which aims at low-consumption (15W) and seems to be about 2 times slower than the fastest 4th gen core i3 one or 4 times slower than a 4th gen mobile core i7, according to cpubenchmark.net (although benchmarks are mostly synthetic so take them with a grain of salt).

It is still more than enough for surfing, videos and normal office usage. If you are looking for a laptop to mostly consume content, that's OK, not for games or CPU intensive applications like video rendering etc. You can find much faster laptops for that price, but they wont have a backwards-foldable keyboard or a high resolution touch screen.

Thank you!

FYI the keyboard sucks, you have to hit the keys really square in the middle for them to register. also bought one and it was a lemon and got a replacement. the screen is very nice. but the lemon i got had a screen with very bad backlight bleed.

Awful processor, voted cold I'm afraid. I'd expect at least an i3 for this kind of money.

In addition, this was under £300 6 weeks ago at Argos?

Around 1800 for the CPU on cpubenchmark.net , rubbish

Thanks for the feedback, I hope keyboard won't be too frustrating -didn't see this mentioned in any review Did your replacement's screen also have bleeding problem?

A core 2 duo scores worse, yet it flies for tasks such as web browsing, watching videos and editing common office documents, and if someone is using a laptop for these tasks, a super fast processor that sits 95% idle isn't doing any good, while an IPS FHD touch screen and the capability to get the keyboard out of the way will. It is a matter of priorities for the tasks that someone wants his laptop for, performance scores don't always matter.

Wow. If this was i5 with 1080p then I'd buy 2

Can you recommend any 14'' laptop that's faster than this for around £300?

What's the point in 6GB ram when the CPU is dire.

They do it because memory is cheap these days. If only more apps used mora than 4gb than it would've been good.

Easy marketing, The uneducated think "more rams more speeds", even though the CPU is a huge bottleneck.

Depends on the priorities. It has a HD TN panel (1366x768), which is much worse than an IPS 1920x1080 one (colors, resolution, angle). Core i3 scores 50% more in the synthetic benchmark of cpubenchmark.net, but then again you need to ask your self, if what you are doing is going to push the CPU, will that 50% increase be enough? Remember, both CPUs are considered slow.

Sorry, in my search I limited myself to touchscreen backwards-foldable or detachable keyboard laptops, and I didn't factor CPU performance much, as it won't be used or CPU-demanding tasks.

There are some use cases where CPU requirements might not be much, however RAM be -and if there is not enough RAM, the OS will start swapping. For example having many open tabs in Chrome (as each has a separate process with it's own memory space). Also many tasks that are normally Input/Output bound, applications that read and write often to the filesystem (even browsers nowadays do that) can be made more responsive by using part of the RAM as storage, through a virtual ramdisk, and scheduling syncing to HDD on the background.

But, like montana78 said, RAM is cheap and like you said later it gives a warm feeling to people who draw conclusions just by comparing numbers, so that's why they probably did it.

LOL, I don't know why I wrote Yoda The force is strong with Yoga, but do not underestimate the power of the Pound side. It's 150 pounds more expensive (the 13.3 screen version).

PS. Of course, as usually, putting even a cheap old SSD, will be the best upgrade for most uses.

This is for the 1366x768 TN screen version, that is sold for £329 in Very

Is the Tesco one a 1080 screen I guess its not ?

Something good has to come along soon ?
When do new intel processors come out that will be when its time.

heat for the screen

Yes the screen is ok on the 1080 type not so sure on the processor for myself I think I will wait .longer

300deg is so pointless

We got the kids this at Xmas (paid just slightly less than this price at Very with a discount code).

Works fine for our basic family browsing and Minecraft.

However my son's friend had kindly clicked on a load of tosh and it's riddled with viruses now (he won't be touching it again!). I've tried several F keys on start-up according to Dr Google's instructions, but can't get into the menu that will enable a full factory reset. Anybody able to give me a nudge in the right direction?

People slating this on processor are being a bit shortsighted. Some people would rather have better image quality and "enough" processing power.

Most processors on the market today are perfectly fine for normal computing tasks and a high res screen and SSD (which this lacks) make a much bigger difference to the overall experience.

Yes you are probably right.
Thing is I don't really want 300 degrees or touchscreen at all its just hard to find a regular win7 i3-i5 13-14inch Lappy at lower cost.
The good screen is a good draw .
Im on a £298 Samsung q330 i3 13" deal from 2011 with new ssd but the fan has gone now and its doing 3500hrs a year still going.

Its not an F combo that you press.

There is something called a "novo button" to get you into a factory reset. (it a little curved arrow in most models).

Its sometimes so small you need to use a paper clip. Typically its either next to the power button or on the side next to headphone jack

Thank you! I'll give that a try today and have a good look.

Have one.... Would not recomend as the windows 8 is not in proportion due to the size of the screen... It's just sitting in a bag as not fit for purpose ....

??? That comment makes no sense!

I keep seeing deals from Very on here so decided to give them a go...

Sure I read a few comments about how bad they were, but I just put this down to bad luck etc. After becoming a customer of there's I can't warn you all enough to avoid this 'company' at all costs. They're a complete joke!

3 weeks later and I'm still waiting on my 'next day delivery' tablet. To be fair they did send me a faulty one at one point, this meant I got to experience the joys of their returns 'process' to further compliment what's been a shocking experience.

I think I would be willing to pay 20% more to buy from ANYWHERE else again rather than giving them business.

I wouldn't recommend the Flex 2 because while the screen is full HD, the combination of low max-brightness and gloss finish makes it difficult to view the screen during the day (indoors).

I returned the one I bought a few months ago.

NB: it was the higher resolution version.

theres this one also...
