Decent price for this entry level laptop from Lenovo and the lowest price yet from Amazon. CPU Mark score of 2435 is also higher than many of the budget Intel Celeron based laptops that have been popping up on here recently.

I would think that machine is perfectly capable, I might be worried about the battery life with that AMD APU (25w TDP). But the performance of the CPU looks pretty good - I recently ordered a DELL with an i7 - that only has a performance index of 3858... so not the substantial difference I was expecting before I looked it up!

In my opinion, I would say the Lenovo compares very favourably given the price difference. Both of the laptops you posted have 8GB of RAM, but In terms of CPU the Toshiba uses the exact same one and the Acer uses an i3 of similar performance. Lenovo purchased IBM's laptop and desktop computer division a few years ago and I have always found them to be both well built and reliable. As of 2013, Lenovo are the largest PC manufacturer in the world by volume.

I don't want a DVD player on a laptop as I hardly ever use them or CDs these days. It would lower the price and weight if they left those off the build.

True - I think the same, but most run of the mill laptops still include them.
Don't remember when I last used a CD or DVD.

Comment on the featured model, the processor is pretty poor - I've got a Lenovo G510 with an i7 (OK, it's quite a bit dearer) and would hate the lag you'd get doing any decent tasks on this one here,

Good price but it's an AMD, it *will* overheat if you do anything that requires a bit of power..

still getting hot , even with all these negative comments ?

The most important thing today in a laptop is the CPU. It has to be fast, but also energy efficient. Thus ensuring good battery life. RAM is useless after 2GB if you not playing games. Storage capacity also useless since its much cheaper to buy aftermarket drives or even USB keys.

So for running Plex on this and playing movies, burning a few dvds will it overheat?

thats AMD laptops for you, they get hot fast but seriously if you dont overstress the CPU it'll be ok so worth the heat..

I'm glad my laptop has a DVD drive, finally decided to put all my DVD's onto hard drive.

Not light use like so. If you were gaming or photoshopping then it would be at risk. If it's a swappable CPU version it's not so bad as the main chip that overheats is integrated into the processor. Fine for what you need, but then so would the £200 lenovo

The laptop is good, I use mine as a media centre hook the hdmi to the tv and it's good to go, If I remember correctly you need to update the bios because the laptop under performs and crashes when the charger is plugged in.

First of all, AMD APU is slower than Intel in term of processor power, but they also faster in term of intergrated graphic core.

read this notebookcheck.net/AMD…tml

And this: notebookcheck.net/Mob…=2&

General benchmark score and ranking. I know you guys dont like benchmarking but it give general ideas of how fast this processor is
I also included the CPU of the laptop that you mentioned.

Not really. The limit is the speed of the optical drive. One reason why optical drives are a waste of time. Though if you've got the patience, or get an active pensioner to do it for you, then once you've ripped all your DVDs you can bin them.

Again, some very misleading information here .

Firstly ram, 4gb plus is the bare min you need in reality for most people, 8gb is honestly preferable.

Second. As much as the cpu is very important, having decent graphics is as important these days even for simple tasks.

Intel oboard graphics are the worst
Amd onboard are good.
Seperate graphics chip and memory is the best .

thirdly Modern amd chips do not run hot!

Any cpu wll get hotter at 100% load. but no chips "overheat" unless you block up the ventilation holes. please stop spreading crap

Thanks for your reply. So based off the scores the i3 3110M is the one to go for. Now I'm confused lol.

I would say if possible, you should go for the i3 3120M, I own one laptop with 3120M myself and It has been very good for office use and light gaming. Please note that installing an SDD will vastly improve the speed of your day-to-day tasks

If you're going to do anything keyboard intensive (like typing) it's important to try it before you buy as, regardless of cpu etc, I tried Tosh, Samsung and Lenovo in John Lewis and for me the Lenovo has far and away the best most usable keyboard - couldn't get on with the others at all.
Mind you, if you're not, then it doesn't matter.
Just thought it worth mentioning

I'm sure my Intel HD graphics 4600 outperforms most amd and it's integrated graphics in the same price range. It isn't dedicated it's integrated and is really really poor compared to some of Intels latest offerings.

Just for the sake of discussion, may I ask what CPU are you using? Interestingly, Anandtech have published an article that state different thing than you anandtech.com/sho…pus

Have a look at the average graphic performance, the bottom of amd chart is A8 5500 which sell for ~65 pound.

I've been using MakeMKV, Jonny.
It rips them without converting them so everything is quite quick.
It rips them at full size so if you are using a program that rips and converts to a smaller sized file it will take a lot longer.

Any recommendations on laptops with matte screen at a reasonable price. Don't need anything for gaming, just office use and films.

Finding it difficult to even find who does matte screens so any pointers would be much appreciated.

"CPU Mark score of 2435 is also higher than many of the budget Intel Celeron based laptops that have been popping up on here recently."

Those budget Celeron laptops run near silent and use very little power, which is important for some buyers. Buyers who perhaps already have enough power elsewhere but want great battery life when on the move.
