Really looking for advice. This seems good and is fractionally smaller than normal laptops which is a bonus for me but also has an SSD albeit relatively small I think. Or is this one a better bet for normal day to day use, not gaming etc. £50 Trade in for old laptops at Currys although mine doesn't qualify! Spotted this in a thread for another deal but can;t find it to credit the original finder.

I would go for the cheaper Pentium processor in preference over i3 unless you need the higher level of on-chip L2 and L3 cache to keep the CPU busier averaged over longer periods, but this is marginal benefit at CPU passmark around 3000; you need to do more AVX / AVX2 / F16C / FMA3 instruction executions in hardware in preference to emulation in software which has an overheead e.g AVX2 is for server application performance, it is useless feature if you don't have server applications like some high performance computing, databases, and video processing.

Edit: If you need a high res IPS screen.
try here from Lenovo's online web shop for current models, £300 gets you a Pentium Gold 4415U with 14.0" FHD IPS (1920x1080).

Within this budget I'd be more tempted to get one of the dell 2 in 1s.

Same processor and Ram but has touchscreen and a better build. Doesn't have ssd but does have a 1tb HDD, so spend £60 on a 250gb ssd and sell the 1tb for £30... Same price as this one then for a better machine.

Good price and a nice bit of kit for the money. Once you've had a laptop running with SSD its hard to go back to the mechanical drives as they seem so slow in comparison.

Also lower spec model available on Lenovv site at £299: www3.lenovo.com/gb/…8:s

Cheaper one has a Intel Pentium Gold (4415U Dual Core)- IMO worth paying the extra for the i3 posted here.

Hi, I got his laptop on Tuesday. Its very good if all your looking for is a general day to day laptop. Compared to my old 5 year one its incredibly quick, light and the battery seems to be very good. Only downside is the small memory but i have an external hard drive to back everything up on so no problem there. Would i buy it again... definitely.

I was tempted with these but reviews were bit mixed and I thought the hinge was probably going to be a weak point. Thanks though )
I bought this laptop, its excellent however the touchpad is dreadful, may be the way i use it but you can't have more than two fingers resting on the touchpad it won't work.

Thanks for all the comments. I'e just been to pick one up so fingers crossed!
I seen this a few days ago, went to look at one instore. Seemed nippy around web browsing and interactig with the UI, my only real complaint was the screen. Its full HD but colours are washed out and just lacked oomph, but this is to be expected for the price. Heat from me (it has been this price for 2 weeks now)
FHD display and probably IPS too, which is pretty damn good at this price. Battery is a bit ****, but there's not much else to complain about.

🤔
We have just bought 35 of them for our school (the pentium gold versions). They are a cracking laptop. Screen is the compromise but for the £250 we paid for them, they are brilliant.

While I agree about the processor, there is also the screen upgrade to full HD and IPS which I consider a no-brainer for £30, getting a marginally better processor is just a bonus

That was the first thing I was going to do when I got this laptop, upgrade the ram to 8 or 16gb. However, I just realised after reading your post that it’s completely slipped my mind. So for now, as I haven’t found a use for the extra ram yet, I’m going to see how it goes and get some more if and when needed.

What may surprise people considering this laptop, I think I got it for £315 from curry’s, is it’s got an extra bay in that tiny laptop for an additional mechanical or ssd hard drive. So if you need this little thing to hold a lot of storage there is an option there.

When taking this laptop out and about I found I can get it into those tiny £2.50 decathlon backpacks!

You are right but totally ignored the third-party's point of view. So you want to add screen into the value equation, OK....

If you want 1920 x 1080 , then no brainer.
If you want 1366 x 768, then also no brainer.

Manufacturers make two screen resolutions for a usability reason other than price reason alone. The price difference as you say, is small.

Some cannot use the higher resolution so need to adjust the resolution in the display settings and/or increase text size in Windows settings. So it is a no brainer not to spend £30 for nothing.

I can use 1920 x 1080 on 11"/13" and 14" but I had to make fonts larger for someone on 1366 x 768, so paying more money for 1920 x 1080 is not worthwhile. There is also eye strain consideration for some.

(Lastly, a possible difference on sharpness, a panel that is optimised for 1920 x 1080, adjusted to 1366 x 768, the text is less sharp compared to a panel optimised for 1366 x 768. But for this one you need to pop into Currys to see both side by side to see if there is such a sharpness difference for these two 14" panels. Some prefer more sharp and some prefer less sharp.)

According to the spec sheet that bay is for an optical drive. Are you saying it's actually got the correct sizing for a SSD instead of optical?

EDIT: Kind of answering my own question, the exploded diagram shows an M2 SSD and a normal SATA bay for an SSD or HDD.

EDIT2: Some people mentioned upgrading the RAM. It takes a max of 8GB 2133MHz in one SODIMM so you would have to rip and replace.

Cold because 4gb memory. Depending on your need, even slower processor, and normal HDD will be ok but 4gb memory is a bottleneck.

A typical user might install an antivirus, and play music or work on office suite while browsing. Chrome will die within 10 tabs.

Are you saying that, even for people that only need 4gb ram, that this laptop is too expensive for the price - i.e. you should be getting 8gb for that price?

Or are you saying people should not have 4gb of ram in their laptop, and that is what you meant by inferring the price is too high/cold?

Yep, it’s better than I thought. Was gong to replace the ram with more, as my 17” laptop of the last 5 years has 16gb. However, I’m so glad now that I forgot about it, I’ve had it a month, as it’s kind of made me realise I could be spending money without needing to. Will hold off the purchase of more ram until I realise I need it.

I am saying people should not be buying a 4gb laptop in 2018, and its false economy to buy it cheap only to upgrade a few months later.
Can upgrade 4GB to 8GB max / 2133MHz DDR4, one DDR4 SO-DIMM socket

So you have a single module to replace the current 4GB to a compatible 8GB DDR4 RAM.

User disassembly instruction is in user manual here

Buy what you need now and upgrade as needed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is an SSD so Windows paging is very much faster. (Paging happens when data from infrequently accessed stuff is offloaded from memory to SSD.)

Moreover, this is the important bit, even if you have 100 tabs , you are unlikely to need to access 100% of each and every tabs every second switching between tabs.

When I get some time, I shall test out how my other 4GB machine fare with 100 tabs Firefox (as my main laptop has 8GB total memory and has 100 tab Firefox.)

The statement of "false economy" is useless as a statement in itself and as advice, without a memory capacity assessment and/or how the user is actually using memory now in current machine. This machine has SSD and will make a difference in paging to/from memory.

People should buy a 4GB laptop in 2018 if they never needed more than 4GBin the past except on occasions during the day.

bla bla.. bla.
I would advice people to watch the video I posted(a professional doing some testing) and judge themselves whether its good enough for their need.
One thing that I noticed on these threads is that many advisers are selectively ignorant of applying population demography and end user needs. They like to be listened to, but ignore the needs of others.

In offering general advice to a forum they absolutely ignore the people in the population with additional usability and accessibility needs (and financial budget limit).

And they point one feature of a total machine as being inadequate, without care about feature's usage, knowing nothing about the needs of a person (holistically).

No thanks to that video, ask 100 of experts across the spectrum of demography, you get 100 different answers.

Sounds like that you need to imagine there are other computer experts, just saying, who works as a volunteer in old people's community centre and offers advice on what to buy.

Respect the person that you are advising and ask what is the current machine , if there is one, and what changes in the future workload, long before you tell someone to watch that sort of expert videos.

Its a good deal SSD size is fine. You will find windows 10 slows browsers down due to all the adverts. SSD doesnt make it any faster if you leave it on St.by. Revert to to win 7 and it will fly.

You don't accept fact and reality easily, your advice on 4GB is inappropriate to the HUKD user base.
You don't even know the HUKD user base, 337 degrees hot so far. I voted hot. That's the reality and a fact from the votes of the user base.
Your "cold" vote on 4GB memory is not well supported by the user base here.
As there are so many "experts" weighing in I'll do my bidding as well...

I find keyboard, touchpad, screen and size/weight some of the most important aspects of a laptop. Unfortunately not many people seem to care about keyboard and touchpad anymore, the one thing that you cannot replace at all and you WILL invariably use a lot.

Why do you need a fast processor if you mainly type emails/documents on your laptop and the f* keyboard is holding you back and driving you crazy?

I believe this Lenovo series has a decent keyboard, but it's usually best to either try it out or read some reviews about it.
