Lenovo Ideapad 11.6" Silver laptop (+5% quidco) @ Currys

I believe this is a slightly better than a recent deal post for John Lewis for 2 reasons:

Intel Celeron N3160 processor with a benchmark of 1693 vs 993 for the John Lewis N3060 version of this laptop

Potential for 5% Quidco on all Lenovo laptops

This is a small portable laptop with not the worst processor and will boot into Windows 10 quickly. The small size means you can get up to 8 hours battery life. It even comes with 1 year subscription to Office 365 & 1 TB OneDrive.

Deal ends Monday apparently

My son happily plays Minecraft on a similar spec'd machine

The John Lewis deal is here:

Both only have a 32Gb fast hard drive but they also has a USB 3 port and there are internet posts about how to upgrade these

I want a basic laptop for my son, basic school work and games such as mine craft or roblox, either this or the Argos deal hotukdeals.com/dea…036 , any suggestions welcome cheers.

2GB RAM? Will it even run Win10 at an acceptable speed?

Serious question, as I'm looking for a v cheap laptop.

It depends on what you're doing (and how you do it), for example if you have multiple tabs open on Chrome when web browsing that will eat through 2GB of RAM in no time. Chrome will do it's best to suspend things and free up RAM at that point but it's not great at doing it & won't make for a great experience.
In terms of just running Windows 10, then sure, 2GB is capable of it. It depends more on your applications and what you expect from the laptop.
Can advise better if you give some specific details what the laptop will be used for

Our lad uses the 100s version and it's still nippy after 2 years use (only paid £90 new from Amazon as well). Does all the basic stuff but the keyboard will suffer if used to play games (just buy an external keyboard like the k400), as a new keyboard is about £150. You could even use an Android emulator to get some extra apps if needed mobdroforpcwindows.com/and…ee/

Is 4GB ram decent for a standard laptop?

See other posts for Windows. Not a problem for most Linux distributions - lightweight XFCE/LXDE based distros should make this box fly. See here for how to do it:

This comment gives the flavour of the result:

"Worked perfectly! Didn't need to use my USB wi-fi dongle. Ubuntu installed using 10GBs less HDD space than Windows 10 and it uses half the amount of RAM when running. Thanks again!"

I was tasked with getting a cheap laptop for my nephew to play Minecraft and Scratch. They already have a laptop but fight over it alot and this small portable one looked perfect for very basic stuff.

I was going to say you should probably get the Argos one since it has more space for programs but then I checked out the processor on it and it's really bad:
cpubenchmark.net/cpu…308
It gets a score of 850 which is almost half the score as this one even though its £90 more!

If money is tight, I would either save money and get this or pay a bit more (£275ish) and get this one with a better screen than the Argos deal (Full HD) and a processor score of 3100ish (nearly 4x faster than the Argos one, twice as fast as this one)
hotukdeals.com/dea…750

None of these laptops though will play Minecraft as well as a £169 Xbox (just saying):

Would this be okay for using word etc?

Here's this on Amazon where it gets a score of 4 out of 5 for at least £180

The reason I post it as the 60+ reviews and 38 questions/answers should help with alot of peoples queries and expectations

There's also a review of the John Lewis version here but he warned that this is a review for the model with a processor running at half the speed:
computershopper.com/lap…10s

Pity they don't do it as a Chromebook at that price. Would work much better than as a Windows machine.

Bought the 100s model last year and bought this model for family this year.
Runs windows 10 completely fine and also runs Microsoft word etc great.
Fantastic little laptop for the price.
People really underetimate these little things.

It is capable of it (it comes with a 1 year Office subscription even, Word documents don't take up much space and there's 1Tb OneDrive to back up to so you're good to go).

The only thing you'd have to bear in mind is that it's an 11.6" screen and a small keyboard so it might be annoying to type in large documents? (then again, it might be fine). There's nothing stopping you plugging in an external keyboard and monitor of course but you might want to check out any laptop this size to see how you feel about it.

It doesn't come with a DVD/CD drive but neither do the latest Apple Macbooks or my £1000 Dell. You'll be surprised how little you'd use one. However if you go to ebay and search for "external usb dvd drive" you'll see them for £8.99 incl. postage if you need one. I got one of these (but never use it)

Ahhh thanks didn’t realise it was small

Got mine today, says N3060 on the box! It's only the dual core version (not opened it to check though), I've used a N3050 before and its not fast enough for even basic things so it's going back. Asked for a swap if they actually have the N3160 though. As this N3060 is the same price as Argos and the N3160 is £175 on Amazon I think they made a mistake on their webpage.

I just collected mine an hour ago and saw the same thing. Gutted. Haven't opened it as it is intended as a Christmas present.

Anyone opened theirs?

Thanks for checking

How'd you find it, speed wise?

WARNING - check your system!!!

Ordered one for delivery next day, received and immediately saw external spec sticker and was the inferior dual core 3060 cpu version.

After 30 mins on hold was assured was a mistake, stock and spec checked in warehouses by operator, took approx 20 mins after, return arranged, recommended buy another in meantime as needed asap, assurances was a picking/warehouse error and should definitely be 3160 spec version as per website and order.

Received second unit, 3060 cpu again. Contacted PCWCurrys, no response.

As spec was checked by operators, im less inclined to think was a website error, seems clear they are shifting lower specced stock. Unfortunately most people may not notice that theyve been given an inferior device. Given the price and the amount potentially sold, and company response, this could be one for Watchdog.

I just picked mine up from Argos and it says N3060 too

It’s not as bad as I thought it’d be (with the n3060 processor) but I only use it for word and browsing really. The only time it has struggled is when I had a few tabs open on chrome, had word open and there was windows updates going on the background

I'm going to stick one of these in the USB3 port both to give me some space and maybe some speed

I'm very tempted to take the underside cover off to see what upgrade options there are. Some websites suggest memory upgrade options, others suggest just an M2 slot but which could take an SSD stick

I have the 128GB version of that and it gets very hot, some people say it just gets mildly hot and some say its gets really hot, might be different for 64gb or perhaps newer ones are better though. If you can get the Samsung version it's better, doesn't get as hot for me. I had it in my router and it was disconnecting by itself, I suspect it was getting too hot.

I have emailed them but haven't received a reply in 2 days, will have to phone. I had the same thing with an MSI Cubi N, was supposed to be a N3150 and it was a N3050, so sent it back and got refund, I did get the N3050 from another place as was only £50 barebones, even with SSD and 8GB RAM it felt slow a little too slow. This 3060 is a little faster than 3050, not sure what to do.

Anyone cracked it open to see if you can upgrade anything? 1 RAM slot? Any 2.5 or m.2 slot?

Still doing Windows updates and might open it up after but I'm guessing it will look like this and just have an m.2 slot

UPDATE: I've just opened mine up which was easy enough and it's exactly like this video. M.2 slot but not 2.5 or mSata (there's M.2 to mSata adapters on ebay). I didn't remove the silver metal though I suspect that would just be solldered on chips so no option to upgrade the memory
Edited by: "tanked" 1st Dec

I thought I read in the specification that it said something like installed memory 2GB upgradable to 4GB, but yeah would be suprised if the RAM isn't soldered on. I may open it tomorrow, can always sell later, just wanted something to try linux on.

Had a look under the metal part, just the CPU and some chips, all soldered on. No RAM slots Nothing under battery either.
